Think we have found a hovel to stay in, on Orkney (she wants self catering). Everything already booked for early July.
Thought about flying from Manchester but the cost is outrageous. £500 each return! I can fly five times the distance for that. Must check out the charging options north of the central belt.

France in general or the one you want in particular? Not that it matters to me; the Yorkshire decision was made for me and I’d rather be the person who doesn’t like the decision than be with the person who doesn’t like it — if you see what I mean. France in general, and the villa I want in particular. The house I want to go to, which we stayed at in August 2020 (having booked before COVID hit), is double the price it was 4 years ago. And we can't find anything acceptable (to Mrs A) for much less. I understand your position entirely.

Easter is early this year. Depending on the weather of course, you might just be able to grab a day or two of skiing in Scotland around then if you want to mix it up a bit. Thinking back to my youth we often had our last trip of the season to Aviemore or Glenshee on Easter weekends. That's an idea. Thanks. I was going to take pushbikes with us, but as we're taking the dog the two things don't really go together. I don't want to be leaving poochie in the cottage whilst we go out riding.

We have always found that our best holidays have been based around a shared activity or interest. Fortunately, we both enjoy a variety of outdoor pursuits and are also always open to trying new ones. Over the years we’ve had holidays that centred around skiing, biking, scuba diving, windsurfing etc and either improving our skills or at least widening our experience of one or more of those and indeed other activities. Couldn’t imagine just sitting around doing not much on holiday. We both had fairly sedentary jobs and hols were the opportunity to have fun and get a bit active for a while.

>> I don't want to be leaving poochie in the cottage whilst we go out riding.[/quote] My dog just runs alongside me when I’m on the bike (mainly off-road of course) He loves it because I can keep up with him! You can though get a sort of spring loaded thing that bolts to your seat post at one end and clips to the dog’s collar at the other so that it’s “attached” but kept away from the wheels and pedals. A mountain biking friend has his two dogs either side of him on his bike so arranged. Reckons they help him up the hills! 😉 Edit - like this… www.innerwolf.co.uk/walkydog-plus-bike-attachment/?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImo_2pdi3hAMV8Y9QBh0uagDUEAQYAyABEgKJRPD_BwE

Could never do anything like that with mine. Too high a prey drive, too interested in other dogs (wants to kill them all if they so much as look at her), and absolutely zero road sense. Yes, I now, never properly socialised and trained, we got her at 6 years old as a rescue from a puppy farm. The damage is done, we do our best to work around it.

We have always found that our best holidays have been based around a shared activity or interest. Thank you, Auntie Humph. We can sustain mutual enthusiasm for the duration of a city break — such as Gloucester in January or York in October. Wouldn’t work for four, though, let alone the six we need to please for a summer trip. So we are where we are — or where we’re going, anyway.

Auntie? Not quite sure what I’m supposed to make of that? Forgive me if I’m being a bit thick! 😉

Well, our trips are a bit suspended in the short term. Father in law has been in hospital for 8 weeks and my wife has had a lot to do. He’s on the mend now and should be out soon. However, we have one holiday booked which involves a couple of weeks near St Tropez in a static caravan. Thinking of padding that out by taking a tent and taking the slow way down and back. Might be away for a month in total. Provence maybe. That’s in the summer, so we’re looking at maybe getting something else in place for spring.
