My new photocard licence arrived yesterday, so I’m now good to drive vehicles till 2030, including some classes that weren’t on the old one. And it’s still got the Council of Europe stars, which is nice. That’s not my reason for posting this, though. I’m wondering if my 2030 licence will be fully driverless; this one seems to be halfway there.

Seems likely that it'll be fully hairless... 😈

...I'm surprised that the DVLA would accept a picture he had taken in Parkhurst......

When my driving licence was due for renewal in 2019 I used the option to use the photo from my passport. Which I am surprised was allowed because the passport was nearly 10 years old so the photo on my current driving licence will be about 20 years old when it is next renewed!

Mine is from the passport too. It’s been travelling the world — Europe anyway — with me for several years already.

Exact same just happened to me. Renewed driving licence in March with a passport expiring this September. It's a good job I don't age at all.

I last updated my UK driving licence in 2012. I swapped it in 2018 for a German licence, they reused the 2012 photo from my UK licence. Next renewal date is 2033 when my eldest will be almost the same age as I was when the photo was taken.

[Deep breath]
Well, rather than sit still for hours while that nice Mr Leonardo draws your ugly mug (no smiling, please) you can now sit in front of a little box with a lens (that’s a piece of special glass) in the front. In the back of the box is a magic silver film (we’ll do computers another day) that records what the lens projects onto it — in this case, your face — which you can then send to the government to be printed on your driving licence.
Cup of tea? 🤨

Sigh. I’ll let the government explain:
Driver licences were first introduced in Britain by the Motor Car Act, 1903, purely as a means of identifying vehicles and their drivers.
All motor vehicles had to be registered, display registration marks and be licensed annually at a cost of 20 shillings (£1).
The fee for the first driving licence, which was obtained over the counter at Post Offices, was 5 shillings (25p).
Failure to sign your driving licence with your ‘ordinary signature’ could lead to a fine of up to £5.

(A house is like a cave but with a wooden door at the front and no bears hiding in the back.)

...don't you think wooden doors are rather passé....
(unlike the bears)
