Suppose you ride this thing twice a month for ten years. That's 8.3p extra per outing. Coincidentally, it's the amount by which I exceeded my 'sensible' budget to buy my blue Whyte bike. Do I regret it? Not even a tiny bit. Front mechs are the things that most often make cyclists curse. They're wedged into a small space where they still manage to collect crap thrown up by the front wheel. If only slightly out of adjustment they will find ways to throw off the chain. They chatter and miss shifts, are a bugger to clean and they take up space that could more usefully be taken by a fatter tyre. £200 to do without one? Bargain!

It's a good point. The chain came off my BSO last night when I shifted from the middle cog, where it had been resting for many, many months, to the biggest cog on the front thingy. But what if I just leave it there now and treat it as a 6-speed bike? I'm not doing King of the Mountains stuff.

If you can cope with leaving it in the middle ratio and using the back cassette only, that'll work, but leaving it in high ratio would put your chain at a funny angle when you select a low gear at the back. Might lead to premature wear on the chain and as WDB says, it will, in that configuration be more liable to jumping off.

Some of my older bikes still have a 3/8 set up, in fact the Speshy I'm mostly using at the moment does. Most of the time I just leave it in middle ratio and use the rear cassette.
Having said that, it is nice to have a low ratio option if you're tackling a really tricky off road climb. High ratio can also be good if you've got the wind on your back.
But, again as the big guy says, the trend is towards 1/10 or 1/11

Heavy, cheap, nasty forks. Better with rigid at your budgie.

No thanks, lockdown is not that bad yet. (And *Magura* - damn spillchucker) Now I'm back from my drive to Barnard Castle walk and no longer posting on the 'phone, I can confirm they're Magura HS11s. Entirely trouble and maintenance free during the 8 years or so ownership, and definitely a better feel than a cable rim brake. TBH, I would quite happily have settled fro this system on a newer bike, the newer one I've got has Shimano hydraulic discs (which, as you may recall, haven't been as reliable as I would like). For the kind of riding we do, rim brakes are generally OK (though, to be fair, the rims on SWMBO's bike are now showing more than a little wear).

If you're going to go for a proper man's bike, ( not one of those girly hybrids ) then click here first, but I warn you, it's going to mess with your mind and wallet... www.mbr.co.uk/😎

Oh gawd that's put me right off. Phew, thanks. Nearly bought the SUV of bikes when I only need the Berlingo/Focus equivalent. My chest is quite hairy enough, I don't need medallions to prove it.

Ok fair enough, don't click it again then, and don't search for the articles discussing "Best bikes under £500" or "Best bikes under £1000" or the "DirtyDeals" column. Don't ever open that link again, it's a bit like cigarettes, try it once, decide you don't like it, never do it again, because if you do... 😈
