If it's not too personal a question, what height/inside leg are you?

How do I know what is a good bike make/model and what is a BSO? After all the point of buying another bike would be to improve upon my BSO as an alternative to trying to adapt the BSO to be competent.
What size do I need? I'm 5'9", 31" inside leg. On Decathlon's website, a medium size bike is for dwarves up to 5'9", and a large bike is for normal people 5'9" and onwards (well there is an XL but I'm not interested in bikes for circus acts). Which is unhelpful for those of us who are 5'9". Yes, I know, go to the store and try them...

New for £150 means BSO: heavy, creaky, clunky and did I mention heavy? Actually my guess is that Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace and the like are sellers’ markets for bikes just now.
But if you see one, show us and we’ll let you know. Stick with major international brands and you won’t go far wrong: Giant, Trek, Specialized all have ‘entry-level’ machines that should be solid enough if you can find one.

Yeah, the £150 I dreamt up was in response to Humph's request for a budget for a second hand bike. I realise it's only going to get a BSO brand new.

So what's my ideal frame size?

Minimum 16" up to max 19" I'd think.
Not sure about that Decathlon, says the maximum weight of bike and rider shouldn't exceed 120kg...now, we know about your fondness for kebabs and beer and I just thought it was worth mentioning...

That method works (sort of) for a road bike like the RBK one, where the top tube is level and everything is in proportion to the seat tube measurement. Modern bikes are all over the place in that respect, hence the (superficially unhelpful) S-M-L system, which works only within one model range. My blue ‘gravel’ bike is a 58cm but my 185cm son can barely ride it because it’s so long. (I think it’s great.) My brown shopping bike is a nominal 53cm because of its radically sloping top tube, but is effectively the same size.
Study geometry charts if you can find them. Much is made these days of ‘reach’ and ‘stack’ but you need to know the horizontal top tube (determines whether you can reach the handlebars) the bottom bracket height (determines whether you can ride rough ground without bashing your pedals) and the standover height (which determines how safe is your sporran.) Get those right and you can adjust the saddle height to suit your legs.
But that Decathlon is just ghastly. Can’t you get on a Cycle2Work scheme like mine?
