But if you have an auto and an EPB the car itself puts the rear brake lights on when on hold. Annoying because the car could be programmed not to. That's the difference between a driver and a user/passenger with the controls to hand. Most cars have auto high beam these days. If you notice the high beam has not dipped with traffic approaching from the opposite direction do you override the car or just leave it because that's what it was programmed to do ? I think a driver would have consideration for other road users and override the error, a user would argue not their fault, it's what the car is programmed to do.

One option I have as part of a pack is Smart Lighting. Or something like that. If I went for one of the packs it was a no brainer having all of it rather than the bits I did want.
I rarely drive anywhere needing full headlights but what I didn't realise with this is once you turn it on (the same as putting on full/high beam) that's it. It is now on. You push the stalk away and it's on. Pull it and you flash the lights.
Now it seems to work well and will put high beam on even when approaching cars and it's meant to mask the HID bulb to not impact any car coming towards you or in front. It does seem to work but you cannot turn it off if you decide it is wrong.
As I say it's not been a problem but it should have been push forward like on a normal light stalk for it on and pull it back for off.
The way you can disable it is it does not work when the car's driving profile is ECO so I guess you can turn it off but it's a couple of button presses. It does seem to work well but I'd like more control.

Another auto headlight design on the Passat derivative I had which does not inflict the Audi A3 or Skoda Superb is the auto lights and fog lights.
When I had the demo of the Passat CC I went over the Snake Pass and back over the Woodhead Pass for a late drive. It got foggy coming back over the top on the Woodhead. Tried to pull the light switch out to turn on fog lights.... but in to auto position that was not possible. So turned it through two positions to get to main headlights.... except the first turn meant I only had sidelights! Briefly it got very dark.
The Skoda lets you pull the light switch in the auto position for fogs. Pull again for rear fogs. The Audi had buttons for fog lights.

My Ford has LED lights, if you're not happy with the lighting, cars coming towards you flashing headlights, you can push forwards on the light stalk and override main beam. They dumped HID with the Mk3 Focus. Don't even have wash wipe with the LED lights now.

So with the Skoda you have to have the front fogs on for the rear fogs to work even though the front is lit by normal headlights ? Odd ! I would think you want the back end lit up (5w) before the Christmas tree (55w+) at the front !

On the Skoda and many of the other VAG cars I've had the front fogs need to be on to have the rears on. Because the rotary lighting control is pulled towards you to turn on the fog lights and position one is for the fronts.

Now you mention it my Mk2 Golf GTi built in Feb. 1990 had a two position switch on the dash, first click was front fogs, second click added rear fog. 30 years ! Where did they go ?

The BMW I'm getting has buttons to press - didn't mess with them on the demo car. Had press buttons for fogs on the Vectra B I had and you used them so infrequently you felt you had to look down a bit to look...
I wonder if the BMW will respond to voice for fog lights? 'Hey BMW, turn on the fog lights.' You can turn on the heated seats by voice. Might rename mine though like the guy on Auto Gefuhl did and have it as 'Hey Mercedes'

Whilst the childhood desire to have as many buttons as a plane reduces as I get older, I do find that a small number of larger buttons in easy to see positions is vital. Using Espadrille's Mini with the iDrive system is totally infuriating as I have to look down to see what menu item I want to press and then the controller works in the opposite sense to what is intuitive. If I turn it clockwise I expect the cursor to go down and it goes up.... (My E-class clearly suits me much better).
I can see the advantages of iDrive if the buttons to select the basic menu of Nav, Radio, Phone, Vehicle and Home were almost in line of sight when driving. At least the climate control is easy to use with three twist knobs and a couple of buttons.
