With the 220 engine, operating the up or down paddles just changes the volume of the engine noise I find. Not sure what else they do... 🤔
On a serious note, they come in pretty handy in being able to select and hold a low gear if negotiating a steep slippery downhill slope. For acceleration, it's just easier to to plant your foot and, well, wait a bit. The engine room gets the message eventually !
It's sort of Aldi own brand wafting. 😉

Can’t imagine I will be travelling any further afield than a 6 mile radius for the coming 3-4 months, so I guess I will just leave the car in D!
Don’t need 2 cars in the household for the foreseeable future either. The Outlander hasn’t moved for 4 days already, yet SWMBO still wanted me to fill it up with diesel last weekend?!
It will come in handy for off-road foraging in the bush in winter if things get really desperate 😬

Most Nz roadkill is possums. Got to be desperate to eat those things, even if they’ve been tenderised by your 17 inch wheel!

Haven’t had cause to drive anywhere today but I rode the shopping bike to the bottom of town to drop a couple of packages in one of those newfangled Royal Mail parcel boxes, and there was a noticeable paucity of motor traffic. Audible, in fact — the usual hum of a main road was missing.
We’ll see if the quiet lasts till the weekend. It’s forecast to be a warm one.

I drove the children to school this morning, traffic here was as bad as ever. Must say I was a bit surprised.

Traffic here pretty much normal. Saw a couple of police cars parked up in town, which is not a common sight under normal circumstances, whether they were looking for Covid "offenders" or whatever, I couldn't say.

Traffic around here and people out and about in general reduced compared to what was already a new normal.

Normal levels again this morning, and I can now officially declare The Season of the Eternal Foglight now OPEN.

The Season of the Eternal Foglight now OPEN. It coincides with holding the car for 5 minutes on the footbrake brakelight illuminations.

But if you have an auto and an EPB the car itself puts the rear brake lights on when on hold. Annoying because the car could be programmed not to.

...and if you have a BEV with an EPV, it doesn’t. 😇

EPV? What's that?
All these bloody initials....
But yes a car (like the Merc even without an EPB) held on Hold, could easily turn the brake lights off after a few seconds.
