The trouble with shedding office space is other businesses also suffer. The bakery, corner shop wherever people pick up a sandwich, coffee whatever on the way in to the office will never recover if business chops office space in favour of people working from home.
Britain in bloom is going to be a nightmare to judge this year, everyone having so much time to sort their gardens.
I've been away from the workplace so long I'm starting to speak with a Scouse accent.

There’ll still be the demand, just elsewhere. We may see an increase in mobile services or a resurgence of neighbourhood shops, which have suffered in the last 20 years.

So the help for the self employed will be interesting to see how it works in practice. How many will have paid no taxes for example due to cash in hand payments? No evidence of income equals no help. I know of a plumber that would only accept cash because they then don't pay taxes... Not that I use them! I just know of them.

It's interesting contemplating Social Distancing and the potential implications of not doing.
I've already said that we walk regularly with friends, but had our last outing the Friday before last, calling off the scheduled session last week in light of the (then recommended) restrictions.
Since then SWMBO and myself have been very compliant with the distancing directions.
Had a call tonight from the female half of our friends, whose Parish Priest apparently expired from Covid-19 last night.
She last met him the day after our last walk (so technically, and particularly if she gets officially notified, she should probably be self-isolating until tomorrow). He wasn't at the following week's service because he was ill.
Slim degrees of separation, eh.

Yes. I got my first report today from someone I know that someone he knows is in intensive care. Not looking forward to the next stage.

I know of a plumber that would only accept cash because they then don't pay taxes... Not that I use them! I just know of them. As I read it they need to have filed accounts/tax returns for 2018/19 and assistance available is based on net profit in that and, where applicable, previous years. Those with no accounts for 18/19, whether new businesses or 'flying under the radar', are being directed to the benefit system. They might, dependant on circumstances, get Universal Credit. That however will depend on usual means test so savings, spouse income etc can disqualify. It pays rent but not mortgage so they will need to negotiate with lenders. It's based on keeping the wolf from the family's door. It doesn't help keep the business afloat for later, driving instructor for example will still be on the hook for leasing cost of the car he cannot use.

well, one and half days after the emergency legislation got the royal assent, Mrs Hof is now an active registered nurse again, (with her old NMC number) and has been told to expect a video call from the local health authority resource placement team.

He's getting to that age now where he probably misheard it as a cojonestest and coughed for the wrong reason.
