I should also point out that I currently have a bad dose of man flu, and, having strung the freaking berries up round the outside of the ruddy house under the most trying of circumstances, they of course, don't sodding work. So I have unstrung them and it would seem, have to source and reapply some new ones tomorrow.
Compliments of the season to all.

The local British Legion have erected a Christmas Tree in the village "Garden of Remembrance". It is decorated with red poppies. The jewellerification of the poppy symbol in the last few years is sickening. It’s become all about the wearer (or tree decorator) and misses the point of the whole thing. I may not buy one at all next year — unless it’s compulsory under the new government’s White Cliffs and Spitfires Act.

That nice Mr Cummings is going to banish them (along with most of the Civil Service)..........

Re: Christmas trees and external decoration. Said with the irony a certain J Corbyn thinks I lack... Thank God I'm Jewish.... At this time of year the only arguments are which colour candles to put into the menorah on Chanukah.. Chanukah. Luckily these arguments are brief and can be rectified the next evening as long as we are not on night 8 which is the last night...

I was surprised and delighted that our tree has only set me back £33 rather than the £70 I had feared. I got it from the Christmas Tree barn in the aptly names Christmas Common, just up the road from Henley-on-Thames, where they grow their own trees on site. Jolly reasonable and a nice place to visit at this time of year. Recommended to anyone in the neighbourhood.
The Civic swallowed the (bit over 6 feet) tree with ease.

For years we bought our tree from the local Forestry Commission outlet. Originally the supply was from trees grown on site, which were 'replanted' every year for sale some year's hence.
There was a bit of a premium for doing so, but at least it was going into the local community.
The prices began to rise, but appeared to have no effect on the demand, in fact, quite the opposite.
The quality of the trees took a nose-dive, and it struck us a few years ago that they were actually being shipped-in for sale, rather than being produced on site (their main business ventures now being non-seasonal; Go Ape and Mountain Biking).
Enough was enough; A similar quality and sized tree was now less than half the price in the local Tesco, where it could be selected without all the pageantry Humph describes in his OP, and without the pleasure of parking in a (very, at this time of year) muddy car park.
The £30+ saved can go on some good bottles!

It probably was supposed to be more expensive Al, but I'm guessing the chap with the trees noticed the Civic and remembered that you used to have a proper car. Bit of Christmas spirit kicked in I shouldn't wonder... 😉

That proper car is still for sale if you're that keen on it.

I was letting Humph know - he's been wondering about new wheels recently and seems keen on the car.
I expect he's on a train with a bag of cash right now.

It would actually still be a great car for someone, provided they knew what they were taking on and the work that was required to get it back on form.
An amateur Edd China type could get a really good car out of that.
Sadly though, it'll probably be bought by someone who shouldn't.

Get real, Humph, it’s a 15-year old diesel dinosaur a couple of expensive components away from being scrapped! Al is well shot of it.
Or, as Al alludes, put your money where your mouth is and give us a good read over 100 pages in the new year 🤣
