I can't think of a single car from the 80's or any era before I would thank you for now. I would have loved a FIAT Strada 130TC but trying to get someone to set up two twin barrel Webers and contacts now will be like trying to find a COBOL programmer.
They were fine in their day but even the hottest of hot hatchery 155-ish horsepower Astra GTE 16v looks a bit lame compared with what is available today in family hatchbacks. What is it they say ? "Never Meet Your Hero".

...don't panic. I'm sure that nice lady that seems to be around the house most of the time will soon find your slippers for you and sit you down by the fire with some Ovaltine.....

After spending several lifetimes watching HubNut tinkering with his 2CV and GSA, I think I have lost the hankering for an older car unless it was fully restomodded and I only drove on a warm dry day... If I won the lottery I wouldn't just buy a nice fleet of favourite cars, I'd employ a full time mechanic..

...and would probably move from Manchester if you wanted a warm, dry day in the year...

I can understand the 'hankering for an older car', Espada. I was tempted myself a few years ago, but not being an expert mechanic I think I was right not to succumb.
In 1971 in my early 20s I inherited a little money from my grandmother, and felt that I could spend £1,000 of it on a new car. £1,000 would buy my a new MG 1300 or a nearly-new Triumph Vitesse: I chose the MG thinking a new car would be less trouble.....I was wrong. I coveted a Vitesse for a long time thereafter.
Only in 2008 could I afford a 'fun car' and was tempted again. But a 40-year-old Vitesse could have been a money-pit, and even the Mark 2 was never brilliant round corners. Instead I got a 2001 BMW Z3, also with a straight-six engine, and had five trouble-free years with it.

The thing is that the most fun I had with a car was a non-turbo Fiat Doblo as a holiday rental years ago. It was so slow you could drive pedal to the metal and not get yourself into trouble with police or your wife. I would like to recreate that in a smaller, lighter, more sylish package. But I think those days are gone..

Nice. 900s are allowed to be black, because they date from the time before it was I’m a Nonconformist Too Black. The extra doors are a bigger problem but I could still forgive them if everything else is good.
Ah, wait, it’s navy blue. Oh well — but I love the blue velour (I suspect ‘suede’ is a mistranslation) interior. Saab velour was great. I miss it.
