Depends though, sometimes cars that seem like they might be steamy on insurance turn out not to be.
My son will have held a full licence for three years shortly. Thinking of getting him on the Qashqai as a named driver (if affordable) to give him some experience of a larger and more powerful car. Or even, fully passing the Nissan on to him and chopping the Aygo in against a newer something for "Her".
He's forever chucking MTBs on the top of the Aygo and while it copes, it isn't ideal for shifting bikes, kit and muddy mates around. The Qashqai isn't as fuel efficient of course, but in the scheme etc...

I really like the C30; even thought of buying a 1.6D one in Orinoco Blue (Vić might prefer Bungo Brown) to replace the S60 at the time when I was doing a long, steady M40 commute. (Ended up keeping the S60 and relocating, as you know.)
But it’s a greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts little car, somehow far more charming than its S40 and V50 siblings. The glass tailgate is a stroke of genius, although it’s probably less practical than the ordinary one in a Focus. It gives the car a bit of coupé personality — part 1800ES, part Lotus Elite, but more reliable than either.

Sounds like a good plan. Maybe 'er indoors could end up with a Duster... I thought of Humph last night. (No, not like that. 🤢 ) There’s a very pretty French thriller in the Walter Presents strand on All4. Episode 2 went a bit Scooby Doo, with an ill-advised visit to the basement, followed by a car chase in, yes, a brown Duster. I’ll leave you to find out how well that went.

My much loved Volvo 480 had the glass tailgate arrangement, I loved that car deeply. I bought it with 150k on the clock and it was tight as a drum. Written off by a passing bin lorry which collided with it whilst parked. Brilliant little car. The C30 is the next generation on from those really. Much in common with the Ford Focus of the era if I'm not much mistaken.
Hmm.

You may find yourself pushing it past the committee.

Photoshop some Land Rover badges on one. She'll love it.

No, actually, she likes Dusters. She has a friend who has one and the "selling" is already done. This could have legs...

Well, that does sound a wee bit expensive I guess. For what it's worth, and I know we're comparing apples with oranges here, but the insurance on the Aygo was about £400 when he was a learner, went up to £900 or so when he passed his test, came down to about £800 on his second year of having a full licence, and was about £700 for his third year. Not had a quote yet for his fourth year.

Quotes for Aygos are around the £800 mark for my lad, with full licence. I'd rather get him something bigger, so I'll have to budget for up to £1k for insurance I expect. He has roundly trashed the idea of a Focus, which is disappointing. But he'll get whatever I can afford, and reasonably source fairly locally. And hopefully be grateful for it. Because if he isn't it's going on eBay.

He's 20 Al. No way would that be acceptable, no matter how cheap or sensible a choice.

Oh I was under the impression he was a practical lad. I can't see how such a thing is any less whatever-it-is than an Aygo.
H Jr: "Hey lads, look at my new car!"
Mates: "What the f*ck is that?"
H Jr: "It's for sticking our bikes in/on and going on lads' adventures"
Mates: "Oh right, good thinking. Let's go!"
Guess I'm way out of touch as usual, I'd have loved something like that at 20. Actually, I did in saloon form, but if it had been a Regata estate, I'd have been absolutely thrilled. What a party bus. But I suppose a CashCow has more "cred" (in the eyes of the deranged), although less practical than a proper estate car.
