...a thing about not spending more on a car than he could possibly help. When he inherited his father’s modest National Savings account, his treat to himself was not a Mercedes, or even a Volvo (whose solidity he would have appreciated) but a contrabassoon. Admittedly, after his death the instrument fetched more than he’d paid for it, so perhaps he knew best after all.
