...of any car I have owned I think: got 57mpg out of the A1 on a steady run on flattish terrain earlier this week.
Can often exceed 50mpg and it’s usually driven enthusiastically so I can’t expect more. It’s the VAG 1.4tsi without cylinder on demand.
Reckon the new 1.0tsi could crack 60mpg...

Best I've got out of the 1.4TSI DSG with COD in the Superb is 51mpg - measured brim to brim. Not all motorway driving. Computer will have reported higher than that.
Interesting that the best I ever got with the same engine and gearbox in the Audi A3 saloon was 48mpg.
The Passat I had with 170PS diesel and a manual never quite not 48mpg. Probably more to do with a 6 speed manual vs. 7 speed DSG and me not changing up early enough at times in the diesel Passat.

I got 70mpg on the computer display driving Reading-Carmarthen in my Laguna 2.0dci estate. What a brilliant car let down by some cheap components and poor electrics.

Oh hang on. I forgot. 4.8mpkwh in the Leaf wins. Because fuel is free.

But what’s 4.8 mpkwh in real money, Al?!
I don’t mind paying for petrol if I can get nearly 60mpg.

But the fuel computer was spot on? 🤔 Didn't say it was. I mentioned it was a figure from the computer specifically to imply that it probably wasn't 100% accurate. I don't bother with worrying about brim-to-brim calculations and all that, it's really not that important to me to bother.

But what’s 4.8 mpkwh in real money, Al?! I don’t mind paying for petrol if I can get nearly 60mpg. That depends on the price per kwh. For the majority of my kwhs, I pay 0p but public chargers range from 0-35p roughly. I'm yet to find a petrol station which charges 0p per litre, even for a car which does 60mpg. Even at 35p per kwh, it would cost about £7 to get about 100 miles of range in my car. Which would be the equivalent of filling an ICE car with a 600 mile range for £42. My 600 mile range E 320CDI now costs almost £100 to fill.

There's some man maths in there Al!
My E350CDi also requires about £100 for a full fill up, but really you should be comparing the Leaf with a similar sized car. I bet a Focus TDCi will require only about £60 for 600 miles.
But the benefit of electric is that the power is only used when required, so I suppose you get very similar range per kwh in traffic as you do on the open road.

Fair enough, EIII, I was only using my own vehicles as an example as those are the two cars I get to choose from every morning on my driveway, of course there are more economical ICE cars than an E320 CDI. A Focus hatch wouldn't be much use to me as my long distance car though, not big enough. I suppose I could get away with a Focus estate which wouldn't be much thirstier.
Still, £0 for 600 miles is a fair bit cheaper than £60 for 600 miles. So is £42 come to that, but there will be vanishingly few EV drivers paying those rates regularly.

I could easily go further than 600 miles on a tank of petrol in the Superb which is 66 litres I think. I've done over 600 miles many times before refilling and the fuel warning light has not come on. I estimate 600 miles at the current £1.259/litre would be no more than £70.
Even without the fuel light on, I can get way more than 60 litres into the Superb tank until the first click.

Indeed. My highest fill I think has been £98 (possibly using V-Power) but certainly got 66 litres in the Merc after my 711 miles on one tank last year.

MPG has never been top of my list when choosing a car. Never owned a diesel and the best mpg I've ever achieved is probably mid 30s. The only car I've owned since 1977 with less than 3L or 6cyl was a 944 Turbo. Funnily enough, despite owmimg several V8s of various capacities it was the 944 which gave me the lowest mpg I've measured over a tankfull. 17mpg on a rapid run from Basingstoke to South Yorkshire when my father was taken seriously ill.
