Driving locally today and I was passing a parked up (small) lorry - a DAF LF. It was parked half on the pavement.
As I was driving alongside, suddenly the half of the rear doors on the road side swung out and we collided. Wiped out the door mirror big time and caused dentsand scratches on the passenger side to both doors, the glass and the C pillar.
The guys who it turns out were DHL (lorry unmarked) were quickly onto getting me a number to call and within 45 minutes their claim handler was ready to start sorting this etc. Except my car belongs to a lease company so they are sorting it. Looks like a decent hire car might be sourced via DHL's side though because the body shop appointed has small cars. But at least I got it assessed this afternoon.
Driving to the bodyshop you soon realise that whilst legal this car is not so safe to drive without that mirror. And to think you could buy cars with only one door mirror at one time! You are so used to that mirror to check when safe to turn or change lane - won't be going on the motorway.
Hopefully get it booked in the week after next. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't come to a few grand though.
I was a bit shocked and angry at it happening at the time. They claimed it was the wind but the door swung around into the road and I'd have expected the guy to walk around with it. But the thing that most made me think was my wife cycles down there almost daily.... if she'd been passing at the point in time it would have been a big injury for sure. So putting it into perspective it's a door mirror (wing mirror to VxFan) and a few body panels/doors.
If It'd been 5 seconds later/earlier getting there it would not have been a problem either. At least I was a good 4-5 foot from the side of the lorry when it happened so it was minor damage.
