Buggah...
1:50am driving back from the airport with wife and daughter. I was on a dual carriageway road which has recently had its speed limit reduced from 40mph to 30mph for money raising purposes. Came up to some lights which have a red light camera but the lights had just turned from red, so I sailed through. I got flashed just over the line and thought "that's odd", the lights are green.
Turns out the camera doubles as a speed camera and was got done at 37mph. No other cars, horses, David Mellor or even people around. Hoping for a course rather than points. I don't mind, but I know this road is a 30mph and was driving reasonable carefully, but talkng to daughter who had been away for two weeks and was telling us all about it.
Annoyed with myself, but also the system that has no leeway for times when strict interpration of the law is unnecessary.
17 years since I last had points. Hoping to extend that period...

Is that engine just a bit too powerful for you? 😉

Sigh. Pathetic, isn't it? I felt the same after getting done at 48 on the M4 by Newport, as I was slowing in to a variable limit 40 zone. Course done, no points, have since made more frequent use of speed limiter/cruise control.

The limiter is one of my favourite MB features; so easy to use. (Although the one in the old E, like Vić’s, was even easier, as it didn’t hide the mode indicator light behind the steering wheel.)

A lot of people with Skoda's probably don't know the adaptive cruise control can be switched over to a speed limiter function by pressing the button on the underside of the cruise control stalk. It's not too obvious it's there.

I also use the limiter a huge amount, but mainly on roads which have average speed cameras or on the motorway. Limiter set to about 77mph keeps the true speed at about 72/73mph and free from worry. Just got distracted this time. At 01:50 'speeding at 37mph' is hardly a crime, compared to 08:25 when not only is traffic much heavier but lots of kids walking to school.
I wish governments were honest and accepted that going over a posted speed limit is not a crime and not a reason to automatically penalise you via heavier insurance premiums. Murder, rape and buglarly are crimes which are unacceptable without mitigation. But driving on a road at one time at one speed could be inherently dangerous but at another time totally safe.
Anyway I have posted the NIP and am hoping for a course.

Yeah, my first speed camera NIP was 36 in a 30 at 5am. Hey ho. That must be nearly 20 years ago now.

Last SP30 was about 15 years ago.
90 in a 60 (overtaking a caravan, saw the cop+hairdryer too late)
£210 and 5 points.

Had my course last night. Four hours scheduled. Took about 3 1/2 although could and should have taken three hours including intro and break part way through.
However, I would say it was informative and useful in a non patronising way. Would not have helped me avoid my getting flashed but certainly would have helped some in the room. However everyone seemed fairly sensible.
There were two simultaneous courses and an acquaintance was on the other. Apparently his group were a bunch of headbangers, many of whom should have been required to retake the test.
The most interesting thing I found out was that there are no standard roads with speed limits of 40mph or 50mph. The standard speed limits are 30, 60 or 70 depending upon the road and 40 and 50 have to be signed specifically. I do find that odd for certain roads such as urban dual carriageways which are 30 but perhaps could 40.
Anyway points avoided.

Erm, yes! Seems unfair to pick on you when you didn’t have to admit not knowing that, but it’s all in the book. Any other limit requires a big sign on entry and repeaters at prescribed intervals — although they’re often hidden behind foliage or billboards, which occasionally causes me some concern on suburban dual carriageways.
I shouldn’t be surprised, though. I play cricket — another activity whose laws and principles are laid out in a slim, affordable volume — with numerous people who’ve never read the book. Sky’s Debate programme debated Johnny Bairstow’s indignation at being required not to bat where he might frequently encroach on the protected area. That change — to limit batsmen as well as bowlers — was new last year, but you’d hope too-level commentators would know.

Buggah again!!
You would think I am a serial speeder...
M60 near the Trafford Centre. Gantry signs drop limit to 40mph which I adhere to initially, but then I find myself being overtaken by everyone including HGVs. So I speed up a little and rounding a bend, expecting to find some obstruction, or a police car protecting someone on the hard shoulder, I discover that there is no reason for the limit - everything is clear and running smoothly. I stay below 50mph and three days later get an NIP for doing 48mph in a 40 zone.
I got an offer of a Motorway Driving Awareness Course instead of £100 and three points. Only two years after my Spped Awareness Course. This time it's online with nine offenders via Zoom.
I can only assume that they sent out hundreds of NIPs that morning.

48 in a 40, that was me on the M4 at Newport a few years ago, just after the 40 flashed up on a gantry seconds before I went under it. Not enough time to comply, flash, buggered.
Sorry EIII but you're going to have to swallow the fact that even if there's no visible reason for the limit drop, it's not a matter on which you can exercise your judgement.
