Espadrille's Mini Clubman had two curious problems necessitating a trip back to the dealer.
First was one of the two boot doors coming unlatched without command and the second was a rattle from the engine bay.
The dealer was very good in terms of communication and customer service; taking the car in on a Sunday, diagnosing and fixing the rattle by fitting 'a new air box' and delivering the car back. But despite playing with the keys and settings the rear door refused to swing open at the push of the button.
It was only when I realised, when the service man brought the car back, that a rubber boot attached to the latch on the other door was proud that the problem was resolved. I refitted it and it worked perfectly; in fact the original problem was probably caused by this ill fitting boot as well.
Simple solutions are too complicated for dealerships. Luckily it was all under warranty.

First was one of the two boot doors coming unlatched It’s a Brexit thing. All new Minis since 2016 have had a software feature known as Blow the Bloody Doors Awf. However firmly you answer ‘No’ to the question ‘Are you sure you want to...?’, it tells you the decision has already been made and does it anyway.

Out of interest, does Espadrille like the double rear doors on the Clubman? We looked at one when they came out, and it seemed a bit of a gimmick - retro for retro's sake. But maybe she finds they have a practical advantage over a normal tailgate?

Well, the divided rear window saves you the ordeal of seeing the driver behind.

But maybe she finds they have a practical advantage over a normal tailgate? I can't think of any particular advantage other than it is easier to open a door horizontally than vertically. I suspect that the given the height of the car, the hinges for the vertically opening door would intrude into the cabin. You do get used to the fact that there is a large vertical bar in the rear view. The doors are a bit of a gimmick. However, the reason for buying the Clubman were more to do with the overall package, shape, space etc especially having a small dog who comes walking with us. And Espadrille didn't like the Countyman, thinking it too bulky. BUT she wanted a Mini... The regular one is poorly packaged and simply too small. Having sat in the back of ours for a long journey, it is a very comfortable and spacious rear seat with lots of leg room and at least adequate boot space. It works for us. I don't blame people if it doesn't work for them.

The name ‘Countryman’ presents other hazards too, especially since the badge is made of individual letters.
