I walked across this bridge a year ago on the way up to Franz Josef Glacier.
Whilst we were there the weather had been iffy, and the road had been closed for 36 hours before due to a landslip. I think it may take a little longer to fix this.
By my reckoning, if you happen to be on the wrong side of the bridge, the detour is over 600 miles! (It's the only road down the West Coast)

They’re a hardy bunch down there, and used to a lot of rain. The mayor has already stated that he expects some interim temporary bridge to be in place within a fortnight! Can’t really afford not to; so much of their local economy is reliant on that solitary road!

I assume there is a stock of "Bailey" sectional bridges stored around the country for just such an eventuality (and in fact, a good few bridges, including that one, appear to be fundamentally of such construction anyway). The slip they cleared when we were down there was removed quicker than it ever would have been in the UK, but the road and hillside above were still in a state where H&S would have debarred their use. I suspect of necessity, risk assessment and risk-aversity of users must work with different parameters to the UK.

Yeesh. Yes, temporary bridges are a marvel. I remember crossing a pontoon bridge by car across the Danube, or the Sava, one of the two, near Belgrade years ago, after NATO had bombed many of the bridges out of the ground.

The new bridge is due to reopen on Saturday morning! The army have helped out. They lost 24/48 hours this week due to, guess what, more heavy rain..!
Still, it will open just in time for the school and Easter holidays. The local economy has been bleeding millions of dollars a day so this is good news!
