Even though my A1 is nearing its 5th birthday, the dealership is offering me a 2-year manufacturer warranty extension for just under 500 quid. Sounds interesting; the car’s barely done 40,000 miles and I do intend to keep it at least 2 more years. Am I feeling lucky...?! It’s got the DQ200 dry clutch DSG gearbox...
But when wrapping up her sales spiel, the Service Manager assured me that the price of the warranty was great value, and that I would definitely get my money’s worth. Eh?! So she’s implying that I can expect to be making a warranty claim or paying a repair bill within the next 2 years?!
She also said that before selling me the warranty they’d want to give the car a thorough inspection. It’d be quite insightful if they did the inspection and decided not to sell me the warranty after all!
All a bit bizarre!

In the sense that you’re not paying for repairs but for the peace of mind of not dreading a big bill, I’d say you’ll get your money’s worth. I’d certainly sign up at that price.
For illustration, my 325d developed a climate control fault just past four years. The fix was several new stepping motors and a control unit — and two days in the workshop to remove and refit the dashboard (leaving a rattle that never went away.) Total bill was well into four digits, but it was all covered by the second year of Approved Used warranty I’d bought.
Take it!

Always a hard question this and several people on the HJ site recommend simply putting the money away in case of the rainy day. However for expensive makes, it might be worthwhile. Having owned my car just over three year and it being about 7.5 years old, the only 'warranty' item I could have claimed for cost me about £425 to fix.

At just under £500 you're buying peace of mind at a reasonable cost, particularly as yuo;ve got a dry-clutch DSG. Good value, that is, provided that the inspection they talk about is free.

Yes - the dreaded DSG. Makes very good sense to buy the warranty with that gearbox.

Out of warranty the German luxury marques all charge a 'diagnostic' fee before you even start repairs.
£500 for 2yrs warranty is very reasonable.
On an i3 it is something like £700 for a single year if EV forums are to be believed.

I'd check what it covers for the DSG - they have a reputation of having problems according to some forums.... I've had none... yet. What if they say it was wear and tear due to driver - clutches are wear items aren't they. So what would and wouldn't they cover on the DSG for example.

Had one on the Roomster. Two included on purchase and one more paid for by me. Worthwhile just for getting the EGR, a common trouble spot on the 1.6 VAG diesel, sorted at a cost which (retail prices) would have been over a grand. Could have renewed again but it's only valid up to 100k miles and car is on 98k.
I intend to run it into the ground (unless a new caravan demands a re-think of both cars) so anything else I'm paying for.
