Turn back time

You know these programmes like Wheeler Dealers and Salvage Hunters - Classic Cars sort of thing where they buy a car cheap, restore it to its former glory and sell it on?
Well, I was pondering ( again I know ) but I get time to ponder while driving y'see, I was thinking that while it's easy to get your car serviced etc, I'm not aware of too many places you could take a car to be properly fettled like that. Maybe there are such places and I simply don't know about them, or maybe they really are rare.
Any old how, the general direction of travel of this particular ponder, was a scenario where you had a car that you really didn't want to change because it just works for you, or maybe you are just unreasonably fond of it or something. But it had got to the stage where it needed a bit more than a change of oil and filters to keep it all together.
I suppose people don't do that with their cars for all sorts of reasons, not least the probably substantial cost, the possible extended period without the use of it, or just a view that it's all too hard, and much easier to simply buy a new or newer one.
What got me to thinking about it was a random chat with an Irish bloke in the queue for the Dublin ferry yesterday, he had an old E Class estate, not quite sure how old, because it was on Irish plates, but it was the one they stopped making about 2009 I guess. Anyway, it was like new, and in the brief exchange he only let go that he had a local garage who took care of it for him. It really was pretty much perfect, visually at least.
I suppose most of us wouldn't bother to properly restore a car unless it was something very special, but I'm inclined to think there's something rather pleasing about doing it to something really quite ordinary.
But then again, despite having access to very good shoes at well below normal retail prices, I'm still inclined to get my old ones repaired as well. Which I do recognise as a form of personality disorder...
😜
