Conned?

A thought just fell into place in my mind;
A million years ago I part ex'd a perfectly sound but totally boring Triumph Toledo in for a dog of a Lancia Beta 2000 Saloon. It was an awful deal, and the car I got started falling apart within days. Consequently I have tried not to dwell up on it too much for years.
However, I do recall that within 24 hours I realised I'd bought a dog, though I didn't yet realise the extent of it's dogginess, and rang the dealer to discuss the first fault. Before I got to say much other than identifying myself he went off on one about how the Toledo's engine had self-destructed and he was being sued by the person he had sold it to and it was costing him loads of money etc. etc. That always seemed a it strange to me, the car had always been boringly reliable and stable, but it never seemed a contrived story. Nonetheless I kind of kept clear of him going forward.
It has just this moment occurred to me that I was conned some 40-odd years ago. There was nothing wrong with the Toledo, it was simply his way of heading me off at the pass with any complaints about the Beta I bought. from him, which he undoubtedly knew was a dog and did know the true extent of its dogginess.
Now I think about it it's so bloody obvious. Why didn't I realise at the time? If I'm honest I kind of admire his novel approach, as long as he wasn't laughing at me behind my back.
Anyway, totally uninteresting I'm sure, but a light bulb moment delayed 40 years was, I thought, worthy of mention.
