In Berlin we did a bike tour on very comfortable sit up and beg type bikes with three speed Sturmey Archer gearbox.
Not totally suitable for my riding in Manchester but I like the position and think that a commute to the office would be a lot more pleasant than my occasional ride on my hybrid bike.
But finding one is impossible without spending what seems like thousands. Any suggestions?

Amsterdam. They’re everywhere and they seem to last for ever. People there ride them while doing email, makeup, drinking coffee and holding an umbrella. Google “Dutch bike” for sources - or pop over there and buy one secondhand.

...I think I may have posted this before: In the very early days of the proliferation of the web, as an early-adopter at work I was regaling a colleague with the ease at which one could find various things by use of a search engine. He had recently disposed of his record collection in favour of CDs and was having seller's remorse. He asked me to look for places he might buy replacements. Accordingly, and at his suggestion, into Northernlight (remember that search engine?) went "second hand vinyl". ........

Not entirely certain I’d use sit up and beg either.

As acustomer of Vitality and having almost enough points I will soon be able to buy a bike from Evans with 50% discount. Are they are decent place from where to buy a bicycle?

Nothing to worry about for sure, they'll even let you trade in an old clunker too.

There are so many obvious responses to that, but perhaps decorum demands a feigned lack of them... 😬

Son has just moved (rented) house at end of a one-year tenancy, and now, being less than 3 miles from work, rather than 12, he has stated he's going to cycle to work, and was going to buy a cheap bike. Looks instead as though I'll be losing one of mine . TBH, with three other bikes to call on (two of them electric) it seems to make sense to pass it on. Though it isn't in the first flush of youth, it is OK for a daily work-bike, and has a pannier carrier, panniers and lights to go with it. Will be slightly upset to see it go, though. Trek 6700 like this: I'll soon be down to the same number of bikes as Humph.

Treks are usually pretty bulletproof. ( bit like Mercs really ) well, 4 cylinder Mercs anyway... 😉

Incidentally, I have an old ( circa 1990 ) Pacific mountain bike which my son has decided to fettle and take to uni. It's been on the wall of my man cave for years. I ride it very occasionally for no reason at all. It looks properly tatty but is in really very good mechanical nick. Ideal probably for leaving around campus.

I have one of these in the garage, and really can't get round to letting it go..... (35 years and counting)

So cool, could we come to some kind of arrangement when you, y'know, die sort of thing? Or even before if that's ok? 😉

I used to have a Peugeot of similar vintage. Gave it away. Can't remember why. Idiot. Actually, come to think, the Peugeot would be even older, by about 5 years.
