I have booked two tickets to see/hear the Spira Mirabilis Orchestra perform Beethoven's 7th Symphony at the Southbank Centre on 15th May @ 19:30. Beethoven 7th - Spira MirabilisEspadrille was meant to join me, but we have just discovered that son #2 starts A-levels the next morning and not unreasonably she really wants to be at home that night. In the meantime, I have to be in London overnight as I will be assessing candidates for entry to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors the next day at a hotel near Heathrow. So, assuming she doesn't change her mind, does anyone fancy joining me? Probably more up WDB's or Avant's street but as long as you can cope sitting next to a Jewish, Manchester City supporting, 53 year old, Mercedes driving, Beethoven fan for about two hours, its on me. I don't bite, I won't rant and I'll shower before I get to the concert hall.....

Sorry, should have acknowledged this as you mentioned me by name. I have to say doing Beethoven (or anything on that scale) without a conductor is an odd choice, and I'm a little suspicious that it's for novelty value rather than the musical kind. It's also difficult to predict my midweek travel plans three months ahead, but there's a good chance I'll be in London that Tuesday and it would be fun to meet up. So count me interested - but by all means bump someone else above me if they can make a firm commitment.

Since I live and work Manchester way, then London would be an expensive trip for some free tickets. Now if it was at the Bridgewater Hall... Thanks for offering to us though.

Very kind of you to think of me, Espada. I'd have been keen to xome and to meet you, but unfortunately that's one of the Tuesdays when I conduct a local choir. Another time, hopefuly.

OK. Espadrille definitely not joining me, so one spare ticket for the concert on 15th May at the South Bank Centre. WDB expressed interest but if anyone interested please PM me using the Messages button above.
Thanks

Trying to sort out next week’s diary. Certainly need to be in Belgium on Wednesday; not clear whether this means I have to travel Tuesday evening. Should know this time tomorrow.

It's a regretful No, I'm afraid. Can't make it to London that night.

So for those of you interested I have just left the concert. There was a brief introduction to the concept of the orchestra as a laboratory to work out what the composer meant without the intermediary medium of a conductor.
The music itself was played with enthusiasm and enjoyment but I'm not sure they necessarily got the ideas right. Being brought up on Karajan, Furtwangler and to lesser extend the 1980s phenomenon of period instruments I found the tempo to change between phrases and the brass and drums were frequently too loud or dissonant. That could have been the acoustics of the hall.
They got a standing ovation at the end which I thought was a little unnecessary but then I am from the grim north where we are a bit more reserved.

It would have been interesting to hear it, so thanks for the report. In music, as elsewhere, the ideas we don’t agree with can be as stimulating as the ones we do. This, incidentally, is my alibi. Not travel - that starts today - but more conductorless Beethoven. www.readingtownhall.co.uk/whats-on/brodsky-quartetMy first night out in Reading. The Town Hall feels the need to put security guards on the front door, but the audience showed no sign of trying to escape. The hall itself is rather charming, a mini-Concertgebouw, complete with gallery on three sides. It was the Brodskys’ first time there too, and they were full of praise for it. The seats could be wider and more comfortable but I’d happily go again. Yes, to Reading.
