Anyway, back to the top of the thread, my lad got his head around the winter driving thing quite well I'm pleased to report. We had several days of variably slippery conditions and I did indeed take the time to sit with him that first weekend to try to give him a couple of tips. From then, he was on his own.
We were chatting about it last night and he said that it felt a bit like being on his mountain bike, in that he fairly quickly learned how to catch a slide and control it. I do know what he means, but it's difficult to explain! Hopefully he'll be ok now if faced with the same conditions again this winter.
Only tangential thought though is that he still has a black box for insurance purposes, and if he's been slithering the car about it may have recorded some "unusual" activity...

Anyone out in the snow then? There's about 4 flakes in my front garden and of course the schools have closed. Just watching the usual RAV4s and Hyundai Tucsons slithering slowly past my front window on their wide summer tyres with suitably shocked and amazed drivers at the wheel. Same old schmame old.

Drove home from Somerset last night, bit white here and there but no probs really. Tell you what though, the lane up to my house was very icy but these here winter tyres didn’t slip once. Might be something in it after all. Hope so ‘cos they are a bit noisy.

More like four inches of the stuff here. Was supposed to be in London today but wimped out of the slithery walk to the station as much as through any fear of being stranded without a train home.

Even non-Premium brands, believe it or not.

Yes, quite impressed so far. Alps at the end of next week though (that’ll test ‘em properly I suppose)

But yes, noisy they are on clear surfaces. Especially in addition to the racket of a rough, clattery 4 cylinder diesel motor, if that's what one has to bear.
