I thought the last sequence about suits, overcoats...bananas and still have change out of a fathing was going to end with the modern update being "you can't get away with that now, too many security cameras".

Right so we got the 10 sq metres put in the snow. No snow here, so we had to travel to find it. We found it near Slough, quite a lot of it in places. Quite a lot on the M4 Spur/Bath road roundabout where we proceed to go 3/4 round in a delightfully controlled and graceful 4 wheel drift with all 4 tyres spinning gently throwing up little fountains of snow, must have a been a right picture. Next was the virgin snowbound Burnham Station car park, small but very empty where we threw the thing about a bit. This is not a car to wrestle, smooth and sympathetic produces very pretty results till the inevitable end swapping conclusion. The car that feels small on the road, suddenly reveals it size and bulk
I went out for a reason, to do some filming. Burnham was closed so it was off to Taplow via the back roads where I discovered the cars fundamental flaw in snow. You can put down a lot of traction, get the thing moving with minimum fuss and drama in pretty dicey stuff, but the bugger wont stop. Tickling the brakes produces a lot of light flashing in the dash, frantic ABS activity, but little in the way of actual retardation. Good planning and anticipation is called for, plan the place where you will need to stop, try and do it as early as possible, but have an escape route planned, and the handling and traction will get you there.
Anyway, we got the shot in the can.

Hmmm You have discovered the problem I had many years ago with my Subarus - going is great with AWD, stopping is no better than any other car, especially down hills.

Add to that list the Korean SUV that slid into the back of MrsB1's Verso some years ago as she waited at a T-junction. "Go anywhere!" crows the marketing department, neglecting to add, "Stop somewhere. Probably."

To go skiing at Tahoe, my brother car of choice many years ago was a 5.2l V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The 4.0 V6 was not up to the task. For the last part of the journey you still needed snow chains.

Straight six, wasn't it? And something under 200hp, which doesn't go far with 2.5t of 1940s engineering to haul up a hill.

Maybe it was a straight 6 in the 4 litre. The 5.2 litre V8 only managed about 250bhp but plenty of torque. Not a very sophisticated car at all really.

America is a surprisingly unsophisticated society, often substituting brute force for finesse. Their cars are only one example.
I still love going there, though, and count many Americans as personal friends. I just wouldn't buy one of their cars. Or washing machines.

I really enjoy their cars and their Washing machines are great with a family. Though their sausages and bacon are indeed crap.

...their Washing machines are great with a family. We taught ours to use the shower, but I suppose it could work. An American machine would be big enough - that brute force thing again. 😛

Oh yes, the cheese is shit. Also their cider, dark beer, tea, phone system, public television, humour, and toasters.

Brother went from a 5.2l V8 Jeep to the original new Beetle (diesel - a rarity in California I think). Now has a Tesla Model S.
