Much like having a regional accent can sometimes be used to advantage.

Yes, just think how many extra sales Humph must have made simply by coming from Edinburgh rather than Glasgow, and therefore being intelligible to non-Glaswegians.

I really should get around to arranging the swop back to the summer tyres on my car in the next week or three. I have the perfectly useable summers stored in my garage so it's really just a case of making the effort to find somewhere and some time to do it.
Faff though isn't it? In the scheme of things.

Given the number of days this winter on which regular tyres might not have coped — which for me would be Friday 1 February — ‘faff’ is putting it mildly.

I've never felt the need before, and frankly didn't really this year, but as the car was going to Italy in February, I persuaded myself that it might be worth a try. In fairness they did at least seem to work pretty well in the snow, but as you rightly say, the benefits are quite hard to justify in typical British winters.

Yes, if you're going to the Alps, you needs them, bach. Otherwise, meh.

I'm not even sure that you "need" them even in extreme conditions. But they do make those conditions easier to cope with I suppose. I've driven all manner of cars in all manner of weather and locations over the years and never been totally stuck. Oddly enough, the E classes have both been remarkably tolerant of snow despite their reputation to the contrary. I think the very fancy traction control systems must help a lot.

You never need them. If you need something then you need chains. If you don't need chains then you don't need anything.
Except common sense.

I was speaking about local laws. I know we're all driving Gods on here who can drive anything, anywhere (although confusingly seem to need to always buy the most expensive tyres imaginable because anything less will KILL you to death).
Or is that just Germany?

It does seem to be a grey area. In Germany, winter tyres are a legal requirement in winter and in Italy they are strongly advised in the mountain areas. However, according to my German friends and indeed Italian ones, the chances of it being checked are more or less negligible, unless it's in connection with another event, such as being stopped for speeding or an accident. In the latter case, if it was found that you may have contributed to the accident by not having winter tyres fitted, then you are likely to be deeply in the poop.

Which is why I reckons you needs 'em in the Alps. Risk averse, me. See?

The only time I drove on lots of snow was in Switzerland about six years ago. The rental car had winter tyres and had far more grip than I had expected.
Living at a house with a steep drive I have learnt that turning the Traction Control off is very helpful is geting up the hill and into a parking area. Otherwise the car refuses to budge and strands itself half way up. Bit like the the Grand Old Duke of York...

Had the winter tyre experience on really deep snow and ice in Belgrade some years ago. Amazed at the grip. Cheapo Maxxis tyres.

Just arrived, coincidentally. (Well, not coincidental for me, obviously.)
Chilly but no snow. Was nice and sunny yesterday, apparently. Didn’t check the tyres on the airport Mercedes. More concerned with dodging the freelancers on the concourse.
