Bit of a TG type challenge tomorrow. Leaving Milan at 05.00 Italian time, and looking to get home before midnight. Valentine’s Day and so on...

But of a TG type challenge tomorrow. Leaving Milan at 05.00 Italian time, and looking to get home before midnight. Valentine’s Day and so on......I fear the detour to take in the girlfriend may put that a little bit in peril.......

Let me know what time you're dropping the Brasato off.

You need to get back before your carriage turns into a horse and cart, and your passport turns blue.

Made it, with 6 minutes to spare ! Milan-Aosta-Courcheval-Mont Blanc-Dijon-Troyes-Calais-Eurotunnel, and home via M20-M25-M40-M42-M6. 950 miles, the car just ate it. Ideal bit of kit for that sort of nonsense, even with a monstrously big roofbox on top.
Sorry chaps, but I had to abandon the deliveries !

How many breaks, and how long were they?

Some, and I didn't time them. Felt fine, kinda used to it.

I haven't driven for that length of time since I was about 21. I don't think I could handle it now.

Joking aside, I do think keeping reasonably fit helps quite a lot. And of course a lifetime of being used to regular long distance driving. Enjoyed the run actually. Alps were stunning. I had just reached the Italian side of them as the dawn was breaking, the views were outstanding. Northern France was, as usual, a bit monotonous, but the roads were clear and in good condition. It was only when I got back onto our broken infrastructure that there were any delays or significant traffic.

Yeah, I'm a bit out of shape and a bit out of practise. I remember being stunned by the Austrian Alps first time I saw them, driving down to Belgrade one summer. That was a holiday though and we took a week to get there. I still much enjoy a good long drive, although 5am to midnight is a bit too much like hard work. The ones I did in Oz last summer were a bit monotonous though and plagued with roadworks. Looking forward to the run to the Vendee again this summer, but I'll be doing that over 2 days, stopping overnight in Normandy.

Trying to decide whether to take the roofbox off or just leave it. I'll need it again on Thursday/Friday next week so it makes sense to leave it where it is, but it is a bit noisy, and I've got a few longish trips over the intervening period. Rips the fuel consumption a bit too. Might just turn the radio up though. Line of least resistance and so on.

Wouldn't be able to cope with that. Off with it. My sister's Volvo which I punted around Oz was fitted with some roof bars, which whistled annoyingly at speed. I didn't need them on, but sis had lost the key and the local dealer couldn't provide a replacement. So they had to stay on. Urgh.
As an aside sis is moving back to the UK next month, and the Oz authorities won't let her sell the car in Oz. She had it shipped out there 4 years ago from the UK and it has to be returned to its country of first registration. So it has to be sea containered back to the UK, at the tax payer's cost (she's there on a government job). Then she's going to sell it immediately as she has a replacement car here already. Most annoying.

Yeah, but then I'd have to keep it in the back garden, and the dog would wee on it. Normally it lives in one of our warehouses but I'm not going anywhere near them this week. Too big to go in the shed or garage.
Difficult isn't it, life, sometimes...?
