I spent a few hours stuck on the autobahn this morning going nowhere, the motorway had been closed after an HGV is reported to have touched a broken down Sprinter van on the hard shoulder. 3 seriously injured, no one killed thankfully. We knew it was serious when we saw the helicopter fly in and around 30 minutes later out again. There's a rule now in Germany in such an event lane three moves over as close to the hard shoulder as possible, lane two onto the lane one divider/marker to create a lane in the middle for emergency vehicles to have quick access, must have been previous issues with the hard shoulder for them to write this one into law. When sitting hard up against the 3' concrete wall with vehicles on the other carriageway making significant progress about 10' away the situation gives you time to think about things and put them in perspective, not that it made much difference to some aggressive driving styles once the traffic was freed to move again. www.ksta.de/region/rhein-erft/kerpen/a4-bei-kerpen-gesperrt-lkw-touchiert-sprinter-auf-standstreifen---drei-schwerverletzte-28951528Scary stuff and a reminder to get well away from the vehicle when it's on the hard shoulder.

Is 'touch' the German for 'totally destroyed'?
The German Army gently caressed the French before occupying Paris......

From this side the Sprinter doesn't look too bad. I have to say from the quick glimpse I saw as I passed the scene I didn't fancy the van drivers chances so was relieved to read no one had been killed. Hopefully, although all seriously injured, not life changing would be the best outcome. Edit: Just to add this is not a ghoul photo from someone stuck in the jam but from another official press source. Attachments:

The photo in the newspaper report was pretty horrible. It's been split apart.

I have been trying hard to visualise it, but I really cant conceive how that can be remotely better than having a clear hard shoulder.

No, I don't get it either and yes there are some breakdowns on the hard shoulder but not of any kind of volume that you would think "Crikey, if there were an accident the emergency services would struggle to get through". What was odd today was they opened the outside lane to allow the traffic trapped between the last turn off and the accident to escape. While that traffic was being released a flatbed recovery truck was trying to pick it's way through between lanes 2 & 3. It would have been better to stop the traffic and allow the poor driver a clear run.
