Cricket club dinner last night, at a village pub ten miles away. Both boys and I went along, and MrsB1 volunteered to drive us there. To get us home I'd booked a car from the firm I use for my airport runs, but instead of the usual well-run-in E220 or A6, what was waiting outside at home time was a black S350.
And I have to say it was rather nice, especially in the powered, heated back seat. "Dad," said Boy1 from the front seat, "can we have one of these?" Probably, we agreed, not quite nice enough to pay £85,000 - or whatever a new one costs - or to be worth the hassle of parking it at Waitrose (I'm still getting used to the extra width and rounded rump of the CLS for that.) But for the occasional £22 ride home, really not bad at all.

I've a friend who has had a few ( well, maybe 3 ) of them. Not new ones, he buys them at about 5 years old. He doesn't need anything like that but he just loves those big Mercs.

That is one hell of a lot of car for the money! And it's pretty good on fuel too. I'm not keen on saloons really, but for someone who didn't mind that configuration it's a beaut.

Not sure I'd want one unless the rear seats were going to be in regular enough use to justify the bulk of the thing. This one was a little older than the one in the link; it had the clock and air vents from my CLS, rather than the W213 E, probably a 2012-14 car, so maybe only £20,000-worth. (Yes, I know the S gets the vents first and they trickle down to the lesser models.) As Humph says, good value if you have a use for it.

Oh Lord yes. That is one superb piece of value for money. Worth every penny of £20,000 that is. In fact for my use, I reckon it makes as much sense as my E350 estate - which is truth is no sense at all for 99% of my journeys apart from those to the airport with luggage or on a ramble with the dog. Don't think our pooch would like being in the boot

Yes indeed, I've wondered why they've never made an S estate. I recently asked my pal from Bentley why they don't do an estate, and he tapped the side of his nose...You didn't hear it here first sort of thing...

Yeah, they're freaking horrible, but much to my chagrin, might actually be not a bad shout for me ( if I were to choose to run my own car in some form of subsidised manner )
Actually, I'd make WDB an offer if I was going to do that.

No, no and thrice no. Ugly and tasteless. In our family, we reckon a BMW X6 is a car for drug dealers, but the Merc R-class is for drug barons. The logic was sound but the execution dreadful. Makes the Renault Vel Satis or Avantime paragons of automotive purity.

That's hardly fair. Look at the interior pictures of that thing: not so much S as Sprinter. Probably a comfortable way to travel, though; I liked the idea of one when we were shopping for what turned out to be the Verso, although the budget didn't agree.

Anyone fancy £7k of Bentley? At first glance, nothing really stand-out about this one, but then comes picture 20, at which point I take issue with the first line of the sales patter... www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202003218650294No, don't ask why I'm searching Bentleys.

A neighbour of mine has a Bentley of that era and his wife has a DB7. They are their daily drivers. Takes all sorts I suppose.
