I'm not big into car cleaning. In so far as I'm not at all precious about it being a bit grubby on the outside. I do like the inside to be spotless though, but that's mainly because I spend too much time in there and I like it clean and tidy.
Anyway, I took a notion to wash it this afternoon, and as on all the relatively rare occasions I do, I like to try to do it properly. So, it got a proper wash and chamois down but the alloys were stubbornly dirty with brake dust and whatever else has welded itself to them this summer, despite my best efforts with hot soapy water and a sponge. I don't like those chemical wheel cleaning fluids which seem to attack the surface of the wheels, and can leave a dull finish.
Then my wife reminded me that she has a steam mop. Now, if you don't know what that is, don't beat yourself up too much, because I certainly didn't until she got one. But it is just exactly what it sounds like, a mop that can send steam to the cleaning head and she uses it to clean the tiled floors. She had remembered that it has some clever little attachments including the facility to remove the steam producing bit from the handle and attach a little round brush for cleaning alloy wheels.
This is now my latest favourite thing. Effortless. Mostly. Nice shiny wheels now. Get one.

Barely needs it, almost invisible to the naked eye in fact.

Astonish Wheel Cleaner will shift stuff that the Turtle shampoo doesn't, and is not acid - just "ionic surfactants" in greater concentration that diluted car shampoo. Spray on, Leave a minute or two, then was as normal. It's cheap stuff, probably see it in pound shops, Home Bargains type places.

Yeah, but, the steamy thing is more fun. In some ways, it's a bit like my petrol strimmer, my fondness for which, I may have previously mentioned... 😜

And when Mrs Humph decides to use said little round brush for something in the house.....I think I'll hear the reaction 200 miles away in Dorset.

It was actually her suggestion to try it, I'm relieved to say. But I'm not going to admit to gaining any form of expertise with it, that could lead to all manner of unnecessary ramifications...

Was it one of these devices?

No it doesn't rotate, but even just scooshing steam onto the stubborn dirt leads to it being easy to just wipe off. In fact the only domestic conflict it led to was the issue of my having used one of her tea towels to do that. But she'll get over that in time...
Get one.

A little bit of prep work up front and all this brake dust and other rubbish isn't an issue. Take the wheels off the car when new, wax them, problem solved. I know that wouldn't wash with company car drivers who always look for the path if least resistance but it really does work. I've got a set of winter alloys on my Volvo which have been on two cars over the last ten winters through the worst salt and road crap. They look like new. A bit of elbow grease is better than steam.

Yeah, I really would have to care quite a lot more than I do to be bothered with all that. 😉

So why bother with your missus household tools ? Complete waste of time when it's going to get traded with a hundred, gazillion miles with no benefit to you. Leave Mrs Humph's tools alone, no blame, and drive it. Mercedes will wash it when they see it every few months.
