We bought an iPhone 5S from EE about two years ago which we unlocked (properly) and then my son used it in Israel whilst on a gap year.
When he came home I got him a new iPhone 6S (in the meantime we left EE for Vodafone) and the old one lay in his drawer. The new one developed a fault and when I charged the old one up it asked for a six digit passcode which neither my son nor I recognised. I restored the phone using iTunes but it said the phone was connected to an account with an email address which again we did not recognise. We have now been told by Apple to provide proof of purchase to have the phone made usable but as it was about 2 years ago I have not kept any receipts.
Is there anyway I can get this phone working?

Have you thought of sending an email to that address? Costs nothing and you never know.
I assume that Apple would accept an email from them saying hat the phone is not theirs.
As I say, costs nothing to try...

I would try the Email idea but the majority of the letters are blanked out. I can tell it is not one of ours as the first letter of the six letter domain is L and whilst my company begins with L it has many more letters than six and besides my son does not have an email address with the company.
Humph's suggestion may be the only route.

Did your son at some point lend the phone to someone for them to use? I'd have thought restoring it (assuming it was sync'd with iTunes) would have worked... clearly it didn't. This page suggests it can be removed by erasing the device in recovery mode: support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204306It would wipe it of course but I assume that's not an issue for you.

Thanks. We went down that road but it seems that another 'user' has registered the phone on Find my iPhone. Clearly this can't be the case and some further Googling indicates this is an Apple issue for which they refuse to accept responsibility. There may be a way around it but unless I can find a receipt we could easily be stuck.
I have now banned all future Apple purchases in the family. If an Android has a problem at least one can buy a cheap replacement quickly and easily.

I think that to all intents and purposes that you are screwed if you cannot convince Apple to unlock it.
Just one more reason I dislike Apple.
