Mercedes Diesel RecallThose of us with E-classes.... Bearing in mind the fiasco of the VW attempts at complying that have created cars which are noisier, lumpier, less economical and generally awful, would you really take you car to be adjusted to comply? My car will six years old in a couple of months. I really am wondering if I should bother.

I wouldn't.
Unless, of course, there was some overarching incentive to do so. I can't see fuel consumption improving dramatically, but if I were keeping the car, and it enabled me to overcome "sanctions" (e.g. more restrictions on city driving), then I might consider it.
There is considerably more restriction based on emissions in Germany than the UK, though cars conforming to Euro4 (and better) are currently effectively unrestricted (and you would undoubtedly fall into this class with a 6 year old vehicle, and get a "green" sticker). In order to provide incentives, I do wonder whether the German authorities are considering tightening up on the categorisation, perhaps with a new class at Euro5+.
At 6 years old, your MB could fall either side of the Euro5 line (and being above it is qualification for the "fix")

I don't have to, but I wouldn't, the same as I wouldn't if I had a VW. The engine and its management has been designed not to comply, in real use, with the legislation, merely to pretend to under test. To force the engine into a permanent state its not designed to be in is inevitably going to be fraught with issues. There is a good chance that VW's that have not been "upgraded" will be preferred on the second hand market to those that have. It will become a desirable feature.

My simple logic is, if they could run in this new modified state okay all the time they would have been produced to do so. So something will be different and probably in a bad way after the change.
And they are doing to recall to avoid some sanctions and fines I would guess. And other manufacturers will be involved soon too.
Presumably a non-MB car using a MB engine will also be implicated? There's a few of those around.
