Currently sitting in a motorway services because just about 6 miles back I felt a heck of a bang as my ns front wheel crashed into a pothole. On inspection, the side wall now has a freaking great gouge out of it. I'm about a hundred freaking miles from home and of course this car has no freaking spare. Freak freak freakety freaking freak.
More later.
Freak! 😡

MB breakdown cover?
Probably best you can hope for at this time is a universal spare wheel/tyre, and a slow journey home.

Can you see the cord through the sidewall? If not, it's not an MoT failure and you should be OK to get home. I have two rips in my front nearside tyre which have been there for two MoTs. I have pointed them out to the tester, but on each occasion has said it is fine.

Home now. Had another look at it and the damage was to the rim protector "bead" area where the sidewall is thicker. Took a view and drove home at 50mph without incident. New tyre ordered to be fitted in the morning. Same blinking wheel where the tyre was replaced a couple of months ago for the same reason. Flipping pot holes. And, flipping low profile tyres made of flipping cheese. ☹️

Even with run flats, you can get damage that rips the tyre and you have no option but to be transported. At least you got home safely in the end. Glad I spec'd the spare tyre for the next car. Would not have been option for the Passat GTE (fuel tank in the way).

When I set the BMW dealership a challenge to find me a stock car (theirs or BMW's) to my preferred spec, I thought the biggest issue would be that I wanted petrol. That was a real filter, getting the numbers down dramatically, but, the biggest issue was finding one with a factory-fit (spacesaver) spare - a dealer fit option not being available as the boot design is slightly different.
They got one for me from a very small selection (my guess is two), but I was told that even if I'd specified diesel it would have been a challenge to get the spare wheel as well. It is rarely specified.
It's one of those things that, a bit like the nuclear deterrent, are a fine balance, but I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.......

Yeah, my rips are on the rim protector bead. No issue if you cannot see cord beneath. Remarkable how a 6 cylinder car also has a spare whe

I was offered an ex-demo X1 last year at a more reasonable price than a barely-discounted new one, but decided against as it had no lumbar support and no spare wheel: like you, I was told that these were rarely specified. Lumbar support is a personal thing; but not to specify a spare wheel, which is an inexpensive option, on a car costing well over £30k, doesn't say much for the intelligence of most BMW buyers.
It sounds as if that pothole was on a motorway, Humph. Another example of the tinpot tyrants digging up the road where it's not needed rather than where it is.

All of my VWs not only had spares but full size alloys. Current A3 is a space saver but better than nothing. Only option on the Superb is a space saver too.

I got a number of options effectively thrown in for free against that (already cheap) price, one of which was sports seats. Frankly, this is the one freebie I'm glad I got. They are more comfortable than the standard seats, and, though it's not quite the same effect as a lumbar support, being able to electrically vary the width of the side bolsters of the seat-back has a not-dissimilar effect on comfort.

Tyre changed now. Apparently it was marginal as to whether the old one was safe to continue to use. But frankly, while I'm doing 1000 fully laden miles a week, I'm not really very keen on keeping a damaged tyre on the car. Seen too many examples of what happens when things get out of shape at motorway speeds. Rarely pretty.

Listed at £75 including addition of the jack/toolkit when I bought. It does, however eat all the under-load-cover space which is otherwise not insubstantial, and might be critical luggage space for some buyers.

If the close encounter of the pothole kind was sufficient to cause the damage you detail, I'd keep an eye on front tyre-wear for a bit. It really doesn't take much to put the front alignment out. ....a kerbing and a pothole might have a further sting in the tail......

It does on my V60 too. But those buyers would be better off getting a roofbox than being stranded with a pothole-induced gash in a tyre that the compressed gunk couldn't repair, and in a country road where there isn't any mobile reception. Now that's what I'd call critical.
