This also reminds me of the switch I did from S-Max to E Class. I no longer needed seven seats, but wanted a comfortable cruiser capable of carrying luggage for five to the airport. I also fancied a 'brand'. After testing several models the E Class worked for me.
But going in reverse and needing more space I would very happy to go back to the S-Max. The problem is probably BIK, but as a private car it may well be ideal.

Yes the luggage space in the S-Max is over 2000 litres with all seats folded away. Emissions and BIK is the problem as a company provided vehicle. The smallest 1.5 petrol engine is only available with a manual gearbox too.
The Kodiaq is even bigger inside.

Why don't we have PHEV diesels as an option? There are non-plug-in diesel-electric hybrids of course, and I'm at a loss as to why they're not more common. Isn't there an E300 Bluetec diesel-electric hybrid? Volvo did/do? A V60 D6 which is a plugin hybrid diesel. Downside Humph could only take flips or flops, no room for both.

VW Transporter? Diesel, automatic, stylish, economical and a van - so low BIK.

The van thing is a serious option. But, then again, it's only Wednesday evening and I've already done nigh on a thousand miles this week. I'd be worried about feeling frazzled doing that in a van.

Serious question, I know there's always a first, do you always carry tonnes of samples or product with you everywhere you go? Does your company not use local distribution centres ? Is your car 'the warehouse' ?

No, it's all samples and other kit to do mini exhibitions. Material swatches etc. Just loads of "stuff". But no, there's no stock in the car.

People will buy an expensive car from a few pics on the internet never having been anywhere near the product or examined the quality of workmanship close up. Then Humph has to cart samples of materials halfway across a continent on the possibility of a sale

Yeah, it a funny old way of doing things, but the kit we sell is really so unique and quite often can be bespoke to a larger retailers requirements. Add in that it changes regularly too and it's really difficult to convey its appearance without doing it that way. We did try to move to screen based selling some years ago but the bottom line is, you just get much better, bigger orders if you have face to face meetings with buyers with examples of the actual products present.
With more generic products it's perfectly possible to do it from images or whatever, but our stuff is very "designery" often limited editions etc. and quite highly priced so the buyers expect to see samples.

It is what it is. What did spring to mind is a band on tour, they have three stages. The one they're playing on tonight which has just gone up, last night's being torn down and one in transit. You're just the artist (or patter merchant) who rocks up to deliver the show.

"Patter merchant" - brilliant, haven't heard that in years !
Might get it put on my business cards now.

Dont give that old Dacia pony, you do this to us every time. It will be another Merc, or a mondeo at a pinch.

VW Transporter? Diesel, automatic, stylish, economical and a van - so low BIK. ....subject to lower speed limits, unless it is one of the versions homologated as a passenger carrying vehicle. Some, if not all of the kombi versions are the latter. If you ignore* most of the reasons for starting the thread, an up-spec kombi would make a good choice for Humph...... ....decent performance, lots of space and load capacity, and great for weekend biking with the velocipedes in the back. (* BIK due to emissions and cost)
