An interesting article as I am planning to buy 4 tickets to Australia and back for next (UK) summer. Current plan is to buy in February for travel in July/August. My Mum has just booked herself a return flight to Canberra from Heathrow on Singapore Airlines for a little over £700 return, on an A380, including a coach from Cardiff and a return rail ticket from London to the same. I think that's a fecking stonking bargain, and that was booked 5 months before departure. I'm hoping to snag a similar deal. If I can get all 4 of us there and back for under £3k I'll be pleased.

Simple reasons for that, no-one in their right mind wants to go to Canberra, even Aussies avoid it as the most boring place on earth. Internal flights are very expensive if booked while there, but relatively cheap if booked here. Even on bush type airlines.

Apart from people who are visiting relatives who live in Canberra, perhaps. Like my Mum. And me. I have also seen Sydney flights on lesser airlines with a change in east Asia somewhere for around £700 recently, for those with no need to go to Canberra.

We flew Singapore Airlines to Houston, from Manchester, for around £350 a head return. Couldn't get near that price from London and MAN's hardly an expedition from here, easier than Gatwick. Good flight on very comfortable A350, full service including food and drink and baggage allowance we barely used half of. I'm still in correspondence with them about a wrecked suitcase but that can happen on any airline.
One of those interviewed about the BA chaos was Mum of one of four accompanied minors stranded in London routing Leeds Bradford>Heathrow>Houston. Wondered if she knew they could have gone direct at cost of a trip over the M62 (or a train trip). Some people though are sniffy about flying with non-western crew.
