Similarly - or maybe conversely - I drove the CLS yesterday for the first time in about a week. I had to keep reminding myself to use the brake pedal at junctions.

There is a lot of discussion on the HJ site about left foot braking. I realised yesterday that at home I almost always left foot brake, but never here. Wonder why? Does the driving side make a difference?

I brake with either foot I suppose. Don't really think about it much.

Do they still make cars where if you do that you hit the brake rather than just space? Fortunately every automatic I've had has had a wide enough footwell for that not to be a problem (SWMBO doesn't like automatics so there's always been at least one manual).
HJ is very keen on left-foot braking: he has logic on his side, but personally I'd only be in favour if I only drove autonmatics. If I had to react quickly in an emergency, I'd do it in the way that comes naturally. With braking there's surely only room for one way (whichever foot that might be).

Just booked our rental car for the annual Feb half term ski trip. Same as last year, Hertz, Ford Focus estate or similar. £153 the week. Could have risked a Punto type for £86, but with ski helmets, boots etc as well as ordinary luggage, reckon I need something bigger even if it is near double the price. FIAT 500L was £5 less, 500X was a bit pricier. Both of which have worse boots than a Focus estate. Last year we got a Leon estate, I expect the same again. Trieste airport.

Actually when we ordered a Focus estate in Venice three years ago, we were given a Fiat 500L but it was the size of the UK MPW version without the third row of seats. Was a good car and as spacious as a Focus. Enjoyed driving it and the rear passengers benefitted from a virtually flat floor.

Having made a claim on my annual car rental insurance policy for the excess charged when I damaged the door of the Outlander, I find that they are asking one or two questions which seem to be unreasonable.
The main point I think is unreasonable is the demand for an invoice addressed to the rental company showing the cost of the repair. I don't think they will get one, because we are talking the Middle East here and I'm not so sure this will be available; or at least available easily or in reasonable time. And why should I be out of pocket when I have a valid claim. Also given that I destroyed a door, £550 is not too bad for a new one. The repair of course might not have been completed by now, but why is the cost relevant when it could have exceeded the excess. To me it is a way of avoiding paying. I think the threat of a walk down the Ombudsman is called for? Any views?

Have you provided them with at least a receipt specifically saying it is for the excess from the Rental Company?

Yes - clear as mud and a separate deduction from teh credit card as well. Not just lumped in with the rental.

I would reply to them giving contact details for the Rental Company. I would point out that you quite understand why you should have to prove you paid this excess, but can see no reason to prove what the Rental Company paid for the repair and thus will not do so. I would suggest that their Motor Claims assessor can do this if he wishes hence the contact details.
I would request their confirmation that this is acceptable within 7 days followed by payment.
At the end of 7 days I'd send them an email giving 72 hours notice of a letter to the ombudsman and a Small Claims process.
And I'd move my insurance at renewal.

Strangely they asked for the details of the rental company, if I was unable to provide the repair cost; so I have copied them in on the email trail so they can see I am not trying to be fraudulent. And I have questioned their demand in this specific matter. I will wait for their response and then do as suiggested.
I use AMEX for travel insurance, administered by AXA, and the attempts they made to fob me off were very surprising and more than disappointing. I was able to receive maximum payout after two firm emails. At least now I know how they operate I am forarmed for the future. I suspect I might have to do the same here.
What gets to me is the fact I have used this company for many years without a claim, and not even bothered to check other companies as the premiums are not high and the renewal easy. I buy annual worldwide cover for two drivers, each of whom can be the lead driver. Last charge was under £100, which given I rent for about 40+ days a year is worthwhile (assuming they pay out).

Yes, well good luck on that one. Firstly I can guarantee the cost would have been more and secondly its not my problem. I have insurance to cover the excess, just pay it. Anyway they do say that they review the claim if there is no response from the rental company and if everything else in the claim looks reasonable they may well pay out.... We shall see..

Thank you. I'll give it a couple of weeks. Israeli office bureaucracy can take a while to whirr into action.
