,.You could well find it cost effective to jump into the zone and book again. Most train tickets are available by m/c, with translation, and it's hardly difficult to pass the time between trains by the river. Bacharach is fine, and you will/should get pizza, but eating and drinking out (particularly the latter) is much cheaper in Germany than France. If the weather is good, consider cycling the Riverside on your extra day. Flat and dedicated cycle lanes make it a good experience (and lots of bier, wein stops)

This is too local for me to recommend a site, less than an hour away, and I have yet to catch up with the shed tuggers in the office to see if there is something else to recommend. I would go with the recommendations of the Moselle valley though, much nicer than the Rhine. Surprised Ted hasn't jumped in, he has some good experience of the Moselle area.

Why ? He's looking for somewhere to pitch a tent, the shed draggers/tuggers usually like a nicer place to dispose of their dinner from the previous evening. Bitburg is a nice place to visit if you want to have your tits bored off by the science of beer (in German or Dutch) with a free couple of beers and a sticker at the end of it.

Who said anything about a tent - let alone a cara... carav... ? (No good, my fingers won't do it.)
We're currently holding a cancellable reservation for an apartment-hotel at Bacharach. Nothing fixed in France yet.

I think the last train back from Koblenz is just before 23:00, so check the "fireworks" timing (I think it should be OK). Edit: just checked. Deutsches Eck is 23:00 for the last part of the display - I'd do a very careful check on bus and train times back to Bacharach. Edit again: there appears to be an 00:03 - last service - but I would check (and also the validity of any day ticket)

Yes, I'd found the 0003 train too. Takes about 37 minutes, plus about 15 to walk up the hill from the station (unless we wimp out and take a taxi.) Cologne station has racks of DB bikes for hire, but I'm not sure if the same would apply in a small town. We could take our own bikes, of course, but they'd need lights and locks that they don't have.

BTW, if you can't be bothered to play musical trains at Oberwesel in order to get the Group Ticket, there is a DB Rheinland-Pfalz day ticket that covers an even greater area for all trains and virtually all buses within the "Land".
Valid from Bacharach to Koblenz and back, definitely valid through to 03:00 for your return, and €24 + €5 for each additional passenger.
Might be worth a look.

Well, here we are - sort of. We didn't get to Koblenz in the end, as traffic problems round Saarbrücken added an hour to an already long journey, and we arrived in Bacharach fit only for dinner and bed.
But what a place! The riverside drive on the way in was spectacular, and the town goes through chocolate-box and out the other side. We had a proper German dinner of pork and Weisswein and a bit of all along the river. Revised plan tomorrow is to take the boat into Koblenz and the train back. All very easy, and a welcome change from our regular holiday habits.
First experience, too, of Autobahnen and no speed limits. A fully-loaded E220 with four bikes on the towbar is not the machine for trying that out - we stuck to our personal 120 km/h ceiling - but there were people who did. I have thoughts of taking the 325 to the Alps for a leg-stretch, so it might be fun this side of the border too.

I already did. But this visit has reminded me how much work my German still needs to get beyond 'beginner-improver'.

If you've enjoyed your brief sojourn on the Rhein, and you want some gentle cycling and good wine, then you really should try the Mosel sometime.
Somewhat more bucolic than the Rhein, (and admittedly, could be a bit 'samey' for an extended visit), but a cracking area for a cycling "chill out".
