Pedals - Not, you might imagine, the most interesting topic, but bear with me. Bicycle pedals and their selection, are a black art in their own right. Flat pedals ( ie not clip on ) are the preferred choice for most mountain bikers. It's quite important not be attached to a bike you might have to bail out of, or more accurately, off, at short notice. MTB pedals tend to be larger too to allow for more substantial footwear. They have little knobbles on for extra wet grip and these wear off in time or get knocked off if you ride off road a lot. I'm forever replacing mine because like many off roaders, I favour polycarbonate pedals as opposed to metal ones. If you've ever had a spiky metal pedal jam itself into your lower leg while you're pre-occupied by other more pressing dangers you'll know why plastic is favourite. Downside is, they aren't as robust.
So, it's time to buy some new ones, jeez but they're expensive, anything under £30 is usually utter carp and you can, if so inclined, pay three figure sums for good ones.
Don't know why I'm telling you this, other than that now you'll know something you maybe didn't before. Bit like QI I suppose, you're never going to, or likely to, need to know this stuff but now you do...😜

Jesus Christ.
*deep breath*
Seriously, I don't think anyone on the public roads should be allowed to use clip-in pedals, it discourages people from stopping when they have a legal, safety-led imperative to do so. Save it for the track.

Worse than "clip-in" pedals are long boot laces, I've fallen off more times than I care to when I've found my feet tied to the pedals by inter-wound laces!

I have one-sided SPD "clip-ins" on my non-electric MTB. I've only failed to get my feet out of the clips in-time once. (Well, you would, wouldn't you!) I have to say that I quite like the use of "clip-ins.

You know those jobs you need to do that will definitely take no more than ten minutes and cost nothing? Yeah one of those...
Decided to change the pedals on a couple of bikes today. ( MTB pedals get wrecked fairly quickly ) Anyway it was all going well until I realised I needed an 8mm Allen key.
This was a problem, and given that it was the Saturday before Christmas, the traffic was apocalyptic, the people who shop in B&Q smell in the main, and the light was fading, I bought one from our local specialist bike shop. Trouble was it only came as part of a stupidly expensive Multitool.
And I skinned my knuckles.
How was your day?

You related to James May by any chance ? ...well, he went to the school next door to mine; but by that time I would have been miles away, so I doubt I got anything by osmosis.....

The people are equally (or even more) smelly (though as many of them are "artisans", possibly with more of an excuse). There are generally, however, much less of them; parking, at least round here, is much easier; and though the counter experience is a pain, it is also usually a reasonably quick "in and out". £4.99 for a set of keys including an 8mm. Just sayin'

Thing is, I almost certainly already had an 8mm Allen key. Locating it was the issue. However, I now possess a very sexy Multitool, which deserves to be casually tossed from hand to hand to draw attention and admiration to it when the moments are apt.

(though if you can't, you can always head out and buy an even more impressive socket set, complete with hex keys)

Casually tossing a socket set from hand to hand at the trailhead might be a bit too challenging.
