Exciting update: had a chance the other night to try the brake thing (remember when we were talking about that?) Liberal application of silicon spray, two grazed knuckles and a ripped nail later I JUST managed to force the damn thing together again. Now the blocks are locked absolutely rigidly against the wheel of course, so it's not going anywhere. However, NEXT time I get four hours to fanny with it in a cold barn I'll try adjusting everything that has been pointed out to me to see if I can get it to work again.

There, right there, that's your problem. You should have used your hands.

As Johnny Craddock once ( allegedly ) said, "No one can make doughnuts like Fanny's"...

I've just remembered another bit is also broken. The cable goes into the brake lever and there's a little turny thing that doesn't engage and....oh never mind, I can see your eyes rolling from here.
I'll take it to a little man again. Which of course mean taking the wheel off to get it in the car. I can't cycle it there, the brakes are locked.
It's a great stress relief, this cycling lark. I must do more of it.
The joy of this life is that absolutely everything I ever do that involves any physical movement ends the same way. I've just walked into the door and fallen down the three steps outside my office as we speak.

If you can engage that bit and screw it in a little, all your troubles will go away. Honestly.

I will try, Humph. I realise I can put pictures here. I will take pictures.
As to the engagement, I did try and there was much useless spinning, with the cable waiting just long enough to tease me before popping out again.
It was as useless an engagement as Marengo was to the Austrians.
