Not strictly DIY but let's bodge it in here anyway. I need to re-energize our stalled kitchen renovation because I'm tired of the tiles being in the garage and not on the walls. Part of this is decorating and protecting the walls in the corner where the cooker stands.
We could tile here too, of course, but we were working on another plan involving a design painted on to some different tiles. It has now dawned on me that this really won't work because the design comes on tiles that are a different style and size from the ones we'll have on the other walls and the whole thing would just look wrong.
So instead of tiles, I'm wondering about commissioning someone to produce a similar design on a glass panel (or panels if we want to include the end wall and maybe the extractor enclosure too.) There's unlikely to be a ready-made panel, so it'll mean developing a design and finding someone who can create it. I'm prepared to commit a fair-size three-digit budget (say £400-800) to the right solution, but has anyone much experience of commissioning artworks, and if so, what's the best way to select and work with an artist?

Your local art college might be a good place to find someone? www.bca.ac.uk

That's a good thought, Z. Although, given the fowl design we have in mind, I have misgivings about asking any kind of student to paint a cock on my kitchen wall.

I have certainly seen frosted glass splashbacks on kitchen walls. Seem to be a relatively generic product. I wonder if they can be adapted with the design painted on (or a transfer if you have a picture of what you want and it can be reproduced)?

Thanks, Esp. We quite like the idea of having something unique, and hand-painted rather than photographed. There's also the question of size: the cooker is an exact 1000mm wide, but the gap up to the extractor won't be, nor will the glass reach right into the corner unless we have it made specially.
Mrs B reminds me that a boy's friend's mother used to be head of art at the local college. She might be a good starting point.

Asked my wife about this ( her degree is in Fine Art ) She thinks the art college idea is good. Says it'd be "easy" and that £100 a day plus materials would be about appropriate for such a thing in terms of fees. Might be two days work to allow for drying times. ( she says, I dunno ! )
If you do recruit an artist or student artist ask to see their portfolio first. Other thing she mentioned was the sort of artist who paints/signwrights narrowboats, because they are used to working with water resistant paint. Apparently it's tricky stuff. If there's a canal marina near you, they'll know someone who does it.

Drying time can be counted as working time? I'm in the wrong job.

Heh heh ! I think what she means is that with waterproof paints they take longer to dry between applications of different colours etc. As in the work just takes longer.

I think this is going to go wrong and you would be better off with normal tiles. There are so many ways it could go wrong and only one way it can go right.

Aw, y'old sourpuss! I found several companies today offering things I like the look of, mostly in fused glass rather than painted. More expensive, but should be more durable too. This one, for example. houseofuglyfish.com/domestic/

Nothing to report so far. Travel and silly amounts of work mean I'm not really in the mood for home improvements, necessary as they are. Got a few days off over half term, though, so planning to get this and a couple of other projects back in motion.
