My last drive took 3 days: one end of NZ to the other, hampered by incompetent ferries and stricken by man-flu. 1400km over 3 days isn’t great is it, when Humph can drive to the Med in one?
Next time I go to the South Island I will be flying!

Is there scope there for a long ferry route, like the ones from England to northern Spain? That must be a similar distance and you’d have the chance to sleep off the man-flu.

Probably something I should post about in Holidays but I have booked the trip to celebrate my 60th.. And dixi has been helping me as I am 'doing' New Zealand. Flights booked and the road trip is Christchurch to Auckland. My first stab at a potential route on South Island is looking like 1,600km, but I will have ten days to do it in and factoring in two full rest days on top. Still working on the details and the North Island route.. Toyota Rav4 (or similar) has been booked.

Sounds good but I'm not sure about flying for that long in one go. I know it's not direct. I assume you've upgraded from cattle class for this. It is a special occasion.

Almost. It's not cheap but we are flying with Singapore Airlines to Singapore for a few days and then also direct, non-stop to Christchurch and home (with a short stop) from Auckland to Manchester. Flying economy but have got the extra legroom seats. Couldn't justify the thousands more for a better cabin and would rather spend the money on the trip than the flights.
Being savyy Espadrille suggested flying home to arrive on a Friday morning so we have the weekend to get some form of recovery before we face the real world.

It’s still just a daydream, but we hold an ambition to make a really epic road trip one day. As in overland to very far flung places over a period of months. It’d be nice if the world calms down a little bit before we do though. Won’t be this year, but it’ll need to be before I/we get much older. Long way down or long way round sort of thing. Maybe I’ll spend the winter planning something.

Same here Humph, always wanted to drive to Singapore. Extremely difficult at the moment. An old school mate of mine did it, then continued on to Australia, and wrote a book about it (he's a Weegie originally but I'm sure you can overlook that this once...) www.amazon.co.uk/Are-Nearly-There-Yet-Dad/dp/1999376110

What did he do when he got there? And how do you manage this is a modern car, which can’t be fixed with a hammer and a pair of nylons?

Went to the Olympic apparently, or so it says in the synopsis. Drove a Toyota Land Cruiser it says. Might buy that book.

We could take our Jeep I suppose. It’s in quite good nick… 😉

…and disposed of the car before travelling home? Or just never went back?

If it was me I'd be taking a 20 year old Toyota Landcruiser that had been properly fettled and effectively rebuilt. You can guarantee that anyone can repair one of those; especially in Afghanistan!
