I have heard that they have a pretty ponderous turning circle though, which you'll get around, but may take a bit of getting used to. Great long distance cruiser I'd think. Does it have rufty tufty tyres on it? It'd be a perfect platform for a brace of mountain bikes, ideal for the very light off roading it sometimes requires to access areas of interest. The Merc does cope but under protest sometimes when the going gets a bit rough. No it does not have rufty toughy tyres on it, its currently shod with a mix of ditchfinders, which will be replaced as soon as with some Michelin all seasons as soon as WDB gets his arse in gear and gives us a report on his. And joy of Joys, it has a spare wheel and tyre. No pump 'n gunk. It has a couple of expensive issues, cam belt change is not far off, (its done 90k miles in 4 years) needs new rear pads, the tyres are shite, and it needs a good valet. Yes it a fantastic cruiser, and its a bit unwieldy in town and country lanes. The country lanes thing is interesting. This car looks mean, rough and tough. The high stance, and the plastic panels make it look like a boxer wearing a headguard. In narrow lanes cars throw themselves in the hedge rather than take a straight right to the chin from this thing. Oh and under the dirt, I found out its black, not shite brown. I might throw some money at it and keep it a while if I like it.

I've had them since July and now it's October and I've still not reported on their winter performance. Let me finish my coffee and I'll pop over to Lapland to try it out properly on a frozen lake or two. In 'normal' conditions they're just fine. No obvious extra road noise, the usual Michelin directional stability, and enough grip to make an abrupt stop on the A46 last night without undue drama. I'm entirely happy with them; any enhanced winter mobility will be a bonus.

Really? Compared with 25,000 miles of contact between tread and Tarmac, do you really think the odd metre of shoulder-on-cushion is going to make the slightest difference?

It puts additional stress on the shoulders and wears them faster, in an area not designed for such wear.

Have you had the XC70 on wet grass yet to check the front is still talking to the back? I'd do that before throwing money at tyres.
