Do you mean it was some sort of voice recording app?

All I can assume is that it's the fire version of Cortana! - he said he just says what he wants to search for and a list of things on that subject comes up on screen! - I've managed to retrieve an App called "evervoice" that uses something called iGvoice that you log into via your Google name and Password, then accepts your speech commands, but not sure if that was what he was using! or whether there was just a Mic app that you just "tapped" to use!

Sounds like the Alexa 'app' which is the equivalent of Siri.

Have you checked with the old fella whether he's done a full power down/restart? I lost some of my Amazon TV Fire Stick menu yesterday and a restart from the bowels of the Settings menu brought it back. Not just a switch off/on. I would guess that similar software drives both devices, but it's just a guess. My son has an older Amazon Kindle Fire and it's a lottery whether or not the thing will switch on. It's a bleeding awful device, frankly.

There should be a mic icon on the top right of the onscreen keyboard. - Well there is on real Android anyway.

Good point, maybe he's changed the keyboard settings by mistake. I've managed to set mine to Chinese by accident before. That's not an easy one to recover from.

We have one each - a 6 and a 7.
I don't use mine at all, as it turns out, as it doesn't do anything I find of interest, rather than any technical constraint. But madam uses hers all the time and loves it to bits. However, all she uses it for is reading books and the very occasional website, nothing else, so very little typing, and no games or anything like that.
One failed once in a similar manner - something or other vanished, don't recall what. I do recall discovering that:
Google says to hold down the power button for 20 seconds, ignoring all the prompts, and it will do a slightly less soft than usual reset, and you don't lose any data or anything, but stuff gets sorted. Which worked physically, but didn't solve the problem for us.
I then discovered that hopping on to Amazon's site and clonking some button or other induced them to ring me in about fifteen seconds, and a knowledgeable person talked me through some arcane and now-forgotten set of steps, and possibly did something at their end - anyway, it all worked again in five minutes flat and has never failed again.
As long as you accept the limitations and you are a very light user then it does the job pretty well, especially for the buttons they cost at the time. I think there was a deal and a special and some other promotion, but we ended up with the two for about £100 or a bit less the pair, as I recall.
