Only when costs reduce. To buy an electric car that can do what say my wife needs is expensive compared to an internal combustion engined car. The saving in fuel over the 7,000 miles she does each year is not enough to compensate for the higher initial price.
I do 10,000 miles a year. Some journeys are long and I would need to recharge but I don't have the time ever. Buying a Tesla may work, but again they are too expensive compared to the reduced running costs.
It all comes down to money. If road fuel was taxed more and electric cars were cheaper to buy......

All of which will happen, of course. Although I see we've admitted a couple of hydrogen heretics (is it a Scottish thing?) so perhaps we'll get an argument. I do hope so. 😈

Anyhoo, I expect we will see battery EVs becoming increasingly popular over the next 10-20yrs.
Fuel cells IMO will not really take off until they can get them successfully running off ethanol/methanol/hydrocarbon fuels (oo the irony) rather than hydrogen.
Ultimately cars will be driven by electric motors, which will be powered by rechargeable batteries or fuel cell+super capacitor/battery set-ups.
Technically having 3kW or 7kW charge points everywhere is not much more challenging than having streetlamps or parking meters.
