www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-37252925I was at a dog show in Andover earlier this year, and I picked three ticks off Fifi Mk2 that were crawling on her fur but not yet "dug in" and feeding. I ended up with a tick in my arm, luckily I have a tick puller in the car. The dog copped one tick in the New Forest last year that I removed, but she is pretty resistant having a two coat fur layer. My old lab had a very bad bout after a tick broke off in her neck and got infected. The dog nearly died.

How come? Mine, hairy beasts, never got a single one as far as I am aware, and lived in the English countryside for some years.

Ticks used to be confined to a few areas in the UK, The New Forest was always a hot spot for them. However climate change and the milder winters has caused the problem to spread and become much more prevalent. I dont suppose you had heard of Alabama Rot when you were here either, thats a new one.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alabama_rotWe have had three cases on Epsom downs, our local vets are contributing to the national reporting database, trying to warn owners where not to go.

My black lab has had about 3 ticks so far this year but we seemed to have been lucky in that each one came off with a simple twist of the tick remover.
