Quite right, got my price per gallon and price per litre confused. So times it by 4, its still only £500 per year. Not quite as dramatic a point perhaps, but still a point. Its not enough to care, especially when its being funded by buying cheaper and delivering me a chunk of pleasure.

Buying cheaper is the point. Rather 24mpg in a £1500 car than 50mpg in a £30,000 plus interest car.

I agree, the older models are far superior. Not that I'd ever have one unless I moved to a seriously rural spot up a seriously unmade road. Which is where I picture you live, or at least it's the kind of place you regularly have to drive.

Ah yes, the "newer" one. That would have been the easiest way to explain that, don't know why I didn't.
The newer one is not really a rough, tough off road vehicle. Its a very big and comfortable road car which can pull a horse box across a field at a gymkhana.

I live part of the time in Santiago, I posted a picture of that yesterday. I also live part of the time in the countryside, the mountains and the beach; To give you an idea... 12 yr old riding off for the day to visit her friend about 2 miles away. (there are no made up roads).

I've had two flirtations with Alfa, had my heart set on them then bought something else. The first was a Nuova 33 veloce cloverleaf Sportwagon 1.7 16v in red, really wanted it but the half field of mud trapped around the seam in each rear wheel arch pushed me to buy a Mk2 Golf GTi instead. The second time a GTV, loved the sharp steering, handling but my budget wouldn't stretch to the 3.0 V6, the two litre felt underwhelming so I bought a FIAT Coupe 20v turbo, same sharp steering and the power I wanted.
Golf GTi
1990 Mk2 big bumper model minus power steering. The power steering came four months after launch mine was one of the first built. Cracking car, not the fastest. Very well built and cost buttons to run.
FIAT 128 Sport Coupe SL (to give it is full title) 1975 it was the car I learned to drive in. It was the car my dad promised himself when everyone else had a Ford Capri. 75bhp from 1290cc when 2.0 motors of the day only had 80. At 5 years old tin worm had consumed the bottom third of both doors, the rain channel around the boot lid and the bottom right hand side of the boot lid.
FIAT 127 1300GT 1983 The 1301 engine in this car never felt as lively as the 1290 in the 128 above. The one and only car I ever had with fishnet headrests.
SAAB 900 V6 SE 1994 the one and only V6 I've ever had. Fuel consumption was OK 26.9mpg regardless how fast or slow I drove it. SAAB main dealer servicing in Sheffield was a bit steamy, 5 & 600 pounds with a 20% discount in the mid-90s. Corners, well it didn't do corners with its Cavalier underpinnings it was a great long distance cruiser though.
Volvo S60 P2 D5 2005 I've never owned a car which required so little maintenance. Service it every 12000 miles and get bored checking the engine oil for it never to move between services on the dipstick. Should never have sold it, the current S60 rattles and creaks and generally feels 'cheap' by comparison.
FIAT Coupe 20v turbo 1998 cracking performance for the time, FIAT Tipo sedicivalvole chassis and running gear couldn't handle the 50% extra power. My car failed is first MOT with shot track rod ends which should have been a service item consumable to be changed every year. Real not-so-ladylike lady magnet.

Oh my sainted trousers, a 127 1300GT. I had the earlier 127 Sport (1075cc and 75bhp I seem to recall - wasn't the 1300 over 80bhp?). I'd only had it about two weeks when I pulled off a petrol station forecourt to turn tight, not noticing the Ford Granada charging along the road from my right. I was lucky that he managed to swerve a bit, and hit me on the front wing rather than smack on the door. I would have been very badly injured, at best. I was 17. It was a write off, of course. The Granada ended up on its side in a ditch. I expected the driver to get out and murder me, but he was quite a gentleman. Grateful to him to this day.
The 1300GT is a close second place to the Alfasud in the cars-I-wish-I'd-owned list.
Oh, and nice pictures, Otto. I see the beauty, but can't imagine wanting to live there. Each to their ownsies.

I love the S Class. ... If one follows that type of motoring all the time one can afford the miley ones, because if it goes wrong you just get shot. A bit like the Third World autocrat who may have been the first owner. .

The 127 GT was 75hp, funnily enough I wanted an orange 127 Sport which was 1050 and 70hp. The problem was they were all knackered by the mid-80s. The GT never really felt that quick, the body styling of the Mk3 body didn't really do it any favours aerodynamically.

Cheers, Bpg. My 127 Sport was black with orange trim round the seats. The orange ones were awesome. I got mine in 1988 and it was, indeed, knackered by then, being a 1978 V-reg. I discovered a bad radiator leak just before I stacked it. The previous owners had installed Strada wheels on it, which were too wide and rubbed against the suspension if anyone was sitting in the back. It was an absolute dog of a car to be frank, but I was 18 and SO wanted it. Mate of mine had a non-Sport 127, he recalls the gearstick coming off in his hand once as he changed up form 2nd to 3rd.
