End of days hit chez bpg yesterday, the heating element in our dishwasher gave up after 8 and a bit years. You forget how much of a chore washing dishes, by hand, for a family of four is.
New pump ordered should be with us by the end of the week. A couple of hours, some scraped knuckles or cut fingers expected. Interesting watching videos on YouTube, the English videos involve removing a side panel and performing the work like a gynaecologist. The German approach is full strip down, bottom off the machine, open heart surgery. I've opted for the latter due to age, I want to check the other parts while I'm in there rather than reassemble to find something else needs attention.
Another thing I've noticed in 2024, the internet really has evolved into quantity over quality despite all these AI and technology claims. Things associated with my order of a water pump with heating element for a dishwasher, two towbar mounted bike carriers, one for e-Bikes and 100m of Cat6 ethernet cable.

I've opted for the latter due to age… Germans take any excuse to get their kit off. 🙈 Good that it’s repairable though. I’ve sent two AEG dishwashers to recycling because they developed problems that no part would fix. Got a German Siemens now.

Our machine is a Siemens iQ500. All parts appear available. Exploded view diagrams, like the old microfiche complete with part numbers helps.

Had to look it up but yours outranks our mere iQ300. 🫡

I think the only difference is the volume of the motor. The one we have came with the kitchen when we ordered and we spec'd a quiet machine.

Our house has an Electrolux fridge which must be 20 years old at least. One of the hinges dropped and the door wouldn't close properly. Also Espadrille managed to break a door shelf. For £80 we replaced both hinges and the shelf. Replacing the hinges took ten minutes.
Quite impressive I thought.

"the heating element in our dishwasher gave up after 8 and a bit years." ..... "New pump ordered"
Eh? What failed then? Is the element in the pump?

Yes, the pump is fine but the water doesn't heat, there's an element wrapped around the pump, should have 20ohm resistance goes open circuit when they fail.
When the replacement pump comes and the machine is back up and running I'm going to strip the old pump down. 80-something euros Vs 1100-1300€ for a new machine is worth a shot.

The dishwasher in the previous house failed - think that was failing to heat but probably wrong. Replaced with a Siemens. Could have got a cheaper Siemens/Bosch but went for the better built one in John Lewis rather than a cheaper one. Reduced in price soon after and they refunded the difference so ended up cheaper than the cheaper one, so to speak.
The one here is not as good. Less programmes and the baskets are not as good to load. Not going to replace when it works. Also cheapest eco mode takes longer and costs more. Again I'm not going to 'save' by spending many hundreds.
I'd not be without a dishwasher if I can help it. Wonderful things and I'm sure they save on water and electric/gas compared to washing by hand. And are handy to store the dishes before washing.

Everyone keeps saying that if you have five or six items to wash, it is cheaper and more efficient to use the dishwasher. True?

Everyone keeps saying that if you have five or six items to wash, it is cheaper and more efficient to use the dishwasher. True? I think it might be more than 5-6 but washing up our daily set of plates and pans, even if we do them in one session, is going to be 2-3 bowls of hot water. That's probably more than the dishwasher uses and it's only heating what's needed whereas I'm wasting water/heat while the tap runs warm. Dishwasher only used alternate days now we're just the two of us. Pans and fancy glasses don't go in there and we do a daily wash of them after dinner.

Never been to the club so I couldn't comment. Not the sort of club I would join that's for certain.
