Our garage looks like millions of others: too small to easily house a car (not that modern cars need housing) it’s our storeroom for tools, odd materials, cricket equipment and anything else that needs to be kept dry but for doesn’t belong inside the house. Too much of it has nowhere to go and has to live on the floor, which isn’t good for access or … anything really.
MrsB1 holds me responsible for this, which is not entirely fair. For the sake of peace, however, I promised yesterday to install more shelving to organise things better in there. I have some slot-together plastic units in there, which were easy to assemble but are bowing under too much weight — and in any case are full. There’s room for more but they need to be made of steel (or possibly wood) to be strong enough. And life is simply too short for the million badly-made square nuts required to assemble your typical DIY store shelf unit.
So does anyone supply (and deliver) solid shelves ready-built? Or an easy-assembly design that is genuinely strong enough to last? They don’t need to be beautiful, just tough and easy to use.

I like the Danish pastries from Lidl in Wycombe. I could cope with a trip over there. 😛
Ah, they’re not available till Sunday (weirdly.) But Screwfix can deliver, so I’ll be looking there, I think.

Didn't realise Wycombe had a Lidl. They've gone up in my estimations.

It’s on the A40, handily placed between the Kia and BMW dealers.

Screwfix promises bolt-free assembly and has a good range of sizes, and can deliver on Thursday. So I’ve ordered some of those.
Sorry Lidl. I’ll be in for the pastries some other time.

Thankfully my garage was built with cars in mind at 9m long by 3m wide, even has a urinal at the back and plumbing for a shower.
Shelving is definitely a good thing though you'll never get control over what goes in there once it is built.

Thankfully my garage … even has a urinal at the back… So does mine but don’t tell anyone. There was this one Saturday morning when other people had apparently taken root in both indoor facilities and the grating behind the garage seemed like the least-worst option. It was only once, honest. 😳

Handy having three toilets I guess.
The previous owners left all the metal shelving in the garage. It is very sturdy and takes up lots of room. Probably wouldn't have put a car in anyway.
Still need to rearrange the shelf contents soon now it's drier - I need to empty a lot out to organise. We had the plastic type of light weight shelves in the last place in the cellar. One set okay as my pantry but the others buckled a bit under the weight of tools etc.

My garage is an early 70s integral double garage. I'm sure it would fit 2 Morris Minors comfortably, and it would still fit 2 modern cars today, just about - I managed it once several years ago as I recall, can't remember which cars specifically though. Various freezers, shelves and old kitchen units are fitted to the sides and would prevent it now, however. The Corolla is sitting in there perfectly comfortably, with plenty of room to move round all sides.
They don't build houses like they used to in the 60s and 70s. It may be ugly, but blimey it's practical.

British houses have been getting smaller for years. A terrible indictment on the way we build and treat our citizens. And garages should be larger than housing a Fiesta sized car or two.

The Screwfix shelf stacks are going together nicely, requiring only a hammer to tap the keyhole fittings into place, and a little steel plate I found useful for levering the plastic feet open enough to get them to go on. Once assembled, their 250kg per shelf rating seems credible. And with two out of three units in place, the garage floor is navigable enough to let us make some better decisions about what still really needs to be there and what can be dumped. It might even win grudging approval from Boy1 next time he’s here. These are the things. Thanks for the advice and helping me get going with this! www.screwfix.com/p/5-tier-galvanised-steel-rivet-shelving-unit-900mm-x-600mm-x-1800mm/511je
