I like my cars to be rattle free and recently my Volvo had developed a ticking from what appeared to be behind the instrument binnacle. I suppose being an older car you can expect the odd creak or groan but this was really doing my head in, a tick, tick, tick similar to the sound of an old cable fed speedo when the needle fluctuated from a worn drive.
I checked the front end of the car and noticed the rear air guide on the front lower bumper was loose, it must have taken a bit of a battering back in January when I was driving in snow and the front was lifted in the deeper parts. That wasn't it, though it is once again secure.
The sound was intermittent, it was really getting to me. I removed my phone from the holder, took the ignition key out of the dashboard slot the sound had gone. I drove for a while to see if it came back. The servicing dealer had put one of their key tags on the key fob. To begin with the plastic must have been soft enough not to vibrate, as this cheap plastic has lost its suppleness over the last six months or so it has started to vibrate on the dash, doing my flippin' head in. That's been filed under B.

Infuriating, isn’t it? I’ve found the CLS is sensitive to which way up I put the key in the ignition. (I know, how last-century is that?) Again, not the car’s fault, it’s the bike carrier keys I keep on the same ring that jingle one way but not the other. Funny thing is, I thought for ages that the sound was coming from behind me and blamed the seat belt housing.

There was a knocking from the Captur for ages which was finally diagnosed as a failed droplink. Now that is fixed the car is sounding and feeling much better. It was really annoying. There is also a dull rattle on badly surfaced roads in the I5 which comes from the rear. I think it is the retractable load cover but it could be the charging cable which I don't bother packing away in its bag - perhaps I should.
Rattles are really really annoying and the silence on a newly sufaced road is like paradise.

Rattle. Now there's a name from the past. Wonder what he's like now he's middle aged. Still go the Panda, I expect.

The new Subaru has a faint rattle at the rear, at low speeds. Pretty sure it’s the fire extinguisher that they helpfully installed in the boot. Perhaps I’ll just take it out and leave it on the shelves in the garage…

Never understood fire extinguishers in cars. Assuming it’s not a Renault, the likelihood of a car catching fire is tiny — but if it does, with all that petrol on board, nobody should be rummaging in the boot for an extinguisher.
My Mercedes still has compartments in the front seat bases. I’m pretty sure neither has ever contained an extinguisher but it may be that the cars sell in markets that require one. I think MB used to include it in Europe too but I’ve seen no sign in either of the cars I’ve had. I keep a first aid kit in one and sunglasses in the other. And I keep forgetting they’re there at all, so I should add them to the list of things to empty when eventually sell the car. 🪢

A warning triangle and first aid kit are mandatory as part of the safety check (MOT) in Germany. Never been questioned about a fire extinguisher.
The first aid kit has an expiry date and must be current means we have enough first aid kit in the kitchen drawer at home to restock an A&E dept. 🙄

Fire extinguisher was compulsory in Belgium in the 90s. I had mine secured under the leading edge of the front passenger seat, ie easy for the driver to grab if needed. Subaru putting mine in the boot is silly. Perhaps if I search online Subaru will have an “official” place where it should be correctly mounted?

The rattle has returned and this time, with a bit more digging, have found it's brake related.
When the clicking starts, the weight of my foot on the brake pedal, no pressure applied, stops the rattle, foot off rattle returns. The internet is great for this kind of thing and it's something that affects more than just Volvo. Looks like it's the main brake booster or servo in English. With that, new springs and shocks, service probably looking at about £1,000-£1,200 for the next garage visit.
It's a thirteen year old car, it's been pretty light on servicing costs for the 10+ years I've had it. I don't think a worn brake servo is enough to condemn it.

It’s not done huge miles either has it? Almost certainly worth fixing.

It's approaching 101,000 so, for a thirteen year old car, no, it has not done a big mileage.
I've had a good root around underneath and can't find any structural rust. The exhaust is a bit crusty may need attention before the next safety check at the end of 2025. Brakes are good, steering tight, only doing all shocks and springs due to rust on the rear shock bodies and the age of the suspension components.

For a quick fresh air break today I went out to check the CLS for fire extinguishers. It has none; one compartment contains a gilet jaune, the other nothing at all. But I did find a pen I thought I’d lost.
The first aid kit is in the boot; didn’t check the dates but it’ll be going with the car anyway.

First aid kit and any fire extinguishers it had would all be out of date. Still can't believe your wife thinks the iX looks as good as she thinks. It's not. But I am sure it's a damned good car. As for rattles, mine had one last month for a day. Turned out to be the lid (with a length of plastic) for the screen wash coming loose and rubbing/vibrating. A bit of a relief but glad I picked up on it as had my wife. Need to be aware of issues early on any car just in case. So far I am approaching 12 months with the Mazda6 and I still like it. MOT due soon as is tax. I've not really driven it on fast A roads for speed rather than cruising I guess.... maybe soon. But 2.5l 4 cylinders will run as 2 cylinders at light load.... so I am guessing MPG will be down if I keep it in sport mode.

Can't believe it's already been (almost) a year since you bought your Mazda.
I need to get the aircon in my Focus regassed before the summer holidays. It's coming up four years old, 20,000 miles on the clock, noticed the air is not as cool as the Volvo on hot days since that car got a new compressor. The EV needs doing too.
