Watching a short video this afternoon from a YouTube channel who is a one-man mechanic in Portland Oregon who specialises in older and foreign cars. He had a Kia Sportage in. He pronounced is the Kia 'sportidge' as in the British pronounciation of garage. Whereas I have always heard it as similar to Nigel Farage - so the Kia SportArrjh.

…especially when it’s usually American speakers who are keenest to shift emphasis and lengthen syllables in anything that looks at all faw-reign — which is what we have to thank for the ubiquitous lah-tay. (Nothing, for the avoidance of doubt, wrong with American English; it’s the dimwitted imitation of it that irks me.)

What is the "British" pronunciation of garage? Some say garridge, some garr-ahzh. And that's not a north/south thing - I say the latter in my mainly RP accent, as does someone from Glasgow. Maybe it's a north/south thing within England, but not the whole of Britain. In fact I'd say "garridge" is a London and a northern England pronunciation - something both parties could agree on for once?

It’s become just a preference thing, like eye-ther / ee-ther or (grudgingly) conTRIBute / CONtribute. (Grudging because the latter is obviously wrong but my Chambers 1998 allows it on equal terms, so maybe it’s me that’s been wrong all this time.)
My children call the junk store that’s too small to contain a car one thing if they’re talking to me and another to their mother.

Corporations throw billions at this stuff I think it's just a jolly wheeze to reduce tax liability. Take Hyundai and their recent BS adverts telling us they'd been wrong all along in their adverts and we were all saying HYunDay wrong. Switch to an American advertising channel and you will here HunDay. Come on marketing bods in Seoul change the name of the company to that of the CEO, call them Dong's cars and be done with it. But even Mr Toyoda called his cars Toyota...but Hyundai has to be the worst transliteration. For 40 years we have been saying Hi-yun-Die and now it's Hun-Day?? Come on!
