My mother was a seamstress for an M&S supplier in the 60s and early 70s. They counted the stitches in internal QC before M&S got anywhere near them to check.

What would Vić’s £30 today be in 1970 money?
I asked the Bank of England. They said £2.28. Meanwhile, AgeUK says you could buy a men's paisley shirt from C&A (!) for £1.65 in 1972. £18.71 today - rather less than I expected. But then also according to AgeUK, £32.50 would get you an automatic Omega watch (model unspecified.) That's in the £400s today, not the £4000 that is more like Omega's starting price now. Maybe conditions have improved for the little Swiss goblins who make them.
