Showing my age here perhaps, but what is the go-to retailer for decent 100% cotton shirts for a working man? Back in the day I used to frequent Austin Reed, and latterly TM Lewin a couple of times a year. Subsequently Banana Republic were very good, until they closed all of their stores post-Covid…. Any recommendations for a little retail therapy when I am in England-land in the summer?
Kiwis don’t have any dress sense at all, and the local market reflects that…

I’ve gazed in at the windows of Turnbull & Asser in Jermyn Street. Very nice; not sure I’m quite in the wear-a-£300-shirt-to-work league. But you may be.
I pinch my nose and buy most of mine from Terry Fuckwhitt. His faux-chummy advertising copy and his disingenuous perma-sale pricing grate on me but he does offer sleeves to fit my gibbon arms and doesn’t confine me to white and sky blue. Lewin and Pink typically come up a bit short, and I’m not sure Lewin is even still trading after collapsing in 2020.
John Lewis and M&S still have racks of wrapped shirts in their stores, just like 1978. Can’t remember when I last bought one of theirs, though.

I suppose that has just reminded me that I haven’t bought anything like that for more than 25 years. I have some in a wardrobe, but apart from when people die or get married, they don’t seem to be used. Perhaps I should try harder.

If we're talking shirts with a collar and worn with a tie then I think M&S or Matalan would be my go to - assuming they still do 100% cotton.
Otherwise, like most of my wardrobe, it's Rohan.

Next time you visit York, WDB, maybe make a point of stopping in Barnsley. The locals there have longer arms than body length I recall from when I lived in the Peoples Republic of South Yorkshire.
Part of the post is in gest though I do recall being there for some reason and tried a top on, the body was exactly the right length, the cuffs were just above my knees. I've never had a problem reaching the steering wheel even when adjusted to longest reach in the depths of the dashboard.

I buy the Charles Tyrwhitt shirts on perma-sale or go to M&S.
I bought a new suit yesterday as we have a few posh weddings coming up. I also spent £70 on an Eterna shirt which I think is a German brand. Nice lightweight Oxford weave and a contrasting inner collar for a bit of posh once the tie is removed.
Sometimes you can get a bargain at TK Maxx but I find designer wear to be poor quality.

I’ll bear that in mind, BPG. Next trip will be in July for graduation, so it’s an opportunity to see Barnsley in all its summer splendour.

I find it’s the sort of place where it’s prudent to keep a bag of diced raw meat in the car so that at junctions you can throw pieces of it out of the window until the lights change. Keeps the locals distracted for long enough to make a safe getaway. 😉

I think you told us the same thing about Wrexham a few years ago, Humph. If there are that many towns on your raw meat list, maybe it’s just as well you’re in no hurry to sell your car. 😛

Broadly speaking, if you’re going to travel anywhere north of the M42 and south of the the A66, it’s wise to take appropriate precautions. It’s just different. 😬

Between the A66 and A69 best not to stop and the raw meat need not have been butchered.

Looks like I can source a shirt or 2 from that Tyrwhitt fellow, and collect them when I am in Shakespeareland in the summer.
Intrigued that you don’t wear cotton shirts Humph? T-shirt or polo for you every working day is (was) it?!
